November 18, 2009 - Faran Brutally Murdered

Agha “Faran” Khan, 21, was brutally murdered on Wednesday November 18, 2009 after being stabbed in the chest with a tire iron and hit on the head and face while playing cricket on an outdoor basketball court near Ford Middle School in Allen, TX.

Richard Garrett Hughes, 18, and Jefferson Josue Medina-Diaz, 21, have been charged with murder (Felony-First Degree). Each was jailed in lieu of $200,000 bail on Friday, November 20, 2009 - see update below.

Faran was practicing a cricket skill known as bowling, which is akin to pitching in baseball but requires a hard-surface bounce. Hughes, Medina-Diaz and Jose Rojas quarreled with Faran over space on the basketball court. First, they hurled verbal abuse and racial slurs at Faran and then attacked him. With three against one, Faran had no choice but to defend himself with the bat. Faran was hit on the back of his head with a tire iron, cracking his skull and knocking him unconscious. The murderers then hit him with the tire iron on his face, back and both knees. The brutality did not end there. The murderers then stabbed him twice in the chest, pushing the tire iron in and puncturing Faran's heart. The tire iron was recovered at the scene with Hughes' and Medina-Diaz's fingerprints on it. Both were booked and jailed for Felony First Degree Murder – see the Allen City Police Press Release of November 20, 2009. The Collin County Medical Examiner ruled Faran's death a homicide and confirmed that the tire iron as the murder weapon.

Hughes is white and his bail was reduced by a judge

One of the murderers, Richard Garrett Hughes, who is Caucasian, was released on bail after his bail bond was reduced from $200,000 to $100,000. The bail bond was reduced by a judge, despite the fact that Richard Garrett Hughes failed a lie detector test on Friday, December 4, per the Allen Police Department. Upon posting the lower bond, Richard Hughes was released from jail on December 6. The other murderer, Jefferson Josue Medina-Diaz, who is Hispanic, remains in jail on $200,000 bond.
