4. yes, but....
The atomic bombings of Japan occurred three months after the surrender of Germany, whose potential for creating a Nazi a-bomb had led Einstein to push for the development of an a-bomb for the Allies. Einstein withheld public comment on the atomic bombing of Japan until a year afterward. A short article on the front page of the New York Times contained his view: "Prof. Albert Einstein... said that he was sure that President Roosevelt would have forbidden the atomic bombing of Hiroshima had he been alive and that it was probably carried out to end the Pacific war before Russia could participate." ("Einstein Deplores Use of Atom Bomb", New York Times, 8/19/46, pg. 1). Einstein later wrote, "I have always condemned the use of the atomic bomb against Japan." (Otto Nathan & Heinz Norden, editors, "Einstein on Peace", pg. 589).

In November 1954, five months before his death, Einstein summarized his feelings about his role in the creation of the atomic bomb: "I made one great mistake in my life... when I signed the letter to President Roosevelt recommending that atom bombs be made; but there was some justification - the danger that the Germans would make them." (Clark, pg. 752).

FDR was cool with carpet and firebombing. I doubt he would have worried about dropping 2 Nukes on Japan.

11. Why do you think that it is funny?
That is vulgar language. You could have chosen to use Japanese and Germans, but you chose instead to use slurs that are unacceptable in polite society. It's not funny, it's disgusting. Grow up.

22. Your attitude is typical of those who are intellectually
incapable of examining their own behavior. You refuse to even consider that you might actually have said something that should be withdrawn. Instead, you strike out - like a child - with increasingly bizarre and irrelevant responses.

In case you've forgotten how this started: your use of derogatory and offensive language is disgusting and has no place on a board that purports to support liberal values. It is not defensible.

15. Ah, if you're going to use slurring terms, do, please,
at least spell them correctly. Otherwise you run the risk of appearing to be not only crude, but ignorant.

3. No individual gets up and says, I'm going to take this because I want it ...
... He'd say, I'm going to take it because it really belongs to me and it would be better for everyone if I had it. It's true of children fighting over toys. And it's true of governments going to war. Nobody is ever involved in an aggressive war; it's always a defensive war -- on both sides." ~ Chomsky

28. This is why Hitler had so much of his nation's support.
Edited on Sun Dec-13-09 03:30 AM by truedelphi
Intellectually, emotionally, psychically.

Germany felt itself beleagurered on all sides. The Allies that had let Germany surrender in WWI(which was a decent move on Germany's part) demanded such costly reparations that Germany's economy had tanked all through the twenties. Had Hitler not stepped forward and refused to make those payments, they would have gone on and on until the early 1980's.

And then in the East, Communism was like a wild animal about to pounce.

However I doubt that we are that beleagured. As more and more people consider the day of September 11, 2001, more and more people reach the same conclusion - it was a set up. A Northwoods operation.

But that event somehow justified our involvement in the war against Iraq, even though the alleged hijackers were mostly from Saudi Arabia.

Right now there are only 700 Al Queda in Afghanistan. And I really don't think that our nation can alter the Afghanis' tribal situation, with so many tribes being under the Taliban. Unless we are willing to be there for several decades.

When will we agree to stop destroying nations in order to save them?

27. As much as it pains me to say it, baldguy...
...but I agree with you.

Einstein was proven wrong during the cold war. Especially during times like the Cuban Missile crisis. We made a great many preparations for all out war during that time, all the while desperately attempting to avert it. You hope and work for the best, but prepare for the worst. That's something you could take to heart on a few other subjects, baldguy. ;)

12. There is no contradiction in Obama's receiving the Nobel Peace Prize
It is to be given to the person or society that
- renders the greatest service to the cause of international fraternity,
- in the suppression or reduction of standing armies, or
- in the establishment or furtherance of peace congresses.

He's obviously winning it for the first reason, with hope that he has potential for the 2nd and 3rd.

Even Nobel was known as "the merchant of death" and didn't think about peace until a mistaken obituary was made about him in a local paper.

26. Actually, the Nobel Committee amended the criteria this year.
It is to be given to the person or society that
- renders the greatest service to the cause of international fraternity,
- in the suppression or reduction of standing armies, or
- in the establishment or furtherance of peace congresses, or
- in not being George W. Bush.

20. Well, since the two phrases have nothing to do with each
other, I think the thing fails. In one case, Einstein was talking about warfare. The other quotation is just a campaign slogan, essentially meaning that Obama could win the election. If you want a quotation from President Obama regarding warfare, I suggest consulting his acceptance speech. There's plenty in there.

As far as I am aware, President Obama did nothing to encourage the Nobel Peace Prize Committee to award him the Peace Prize. They did it all on their own, based on criteria they established. He accepted it and gave a speech that many find inspired and that many find awful. War sucks.

The illustration above, though, is bogus, since it doesn't deal with similar statements in similar situations. It is a cowardly attack. Had the creator of the thing bothered to read the speech, I'm sure he could have found something in it to use in place of "Yes we can." Then, it would have made sense, at least, rather than not making any sense at all.

29. one cannot invent dynamite and found a peace prize for the world

or

One cannot write to FDR and insist that he start the Manhattan Project and then be surprised when the government use to significantly reduce military and civilian deaths.

It is too sensitive to make good weapons.
