Wealth, Income, and Power
by G. William Domhoff
September 2005 (updated October 2009)
This document presents details on the wealth and income distributions in the United States, and explains how we use these two distributions as power indicators.

Some of the information might be a surprise to many people. The most amazing numbers on income inequality come last, showing the change in the ratio of the average CEO's paycheck to that of the average factory worker over the past 40 years.

2. Nope because no matter what you say to them it always comes right
back to.........they worked hard for their money and its not right to punish the hard working rich by making them pay for the lazy poor. Doesn't matter what you show them as proof of the rich getting richer, they believe the rich worked hard for everything they got. Same answer you get when you mention estate tax.

Reagan said it was true and Reagan never lied, in fact, when Reagans daddy asked him about a missing cherry tree, Reagan couldn't lie and said "yes dad the democrats chopped the tree down with the help of the poor".

5. I have this argument with my Repug coworkes about once
a week. I keep telling them they are part of the middle class and they won't be rich like they think. And when I bring up tax the rich and that taxes were much higher for the rich under the "God" Reagan you should see the blank expressions

The hardworking middle class are carrying the load for the very rich as well as well-compensated government employees. I wish my partner could work for the government and have job security.

Excerpt:

The number of federal workers earning six-figure salaries has exploded during the recession, according to a USA TODAY analysis of federal salary data.

Federal employees making salaries of $100,000 or more jumped from 14% to 19% of civil servants during the recession's first 18 months and that's before overtime pay and bonuses are counted.

Federal workers are enjoying an extraordinary boom time in pay and hiring during a recession that has cost 7.3 million jobs in the private sector.

The highest-paid federal employees are doing best of all on salary increases. Defense Department civilian employees earning $150,000 or more increased from 1,868 in December 2007 to 10,100 in June 2009, the most recent figure available.

When the recession started, the Transportation Department had only one person earning a salary of $170,000 or more. Eighteen months later, 1,690 employees had salaries above $170,000.

The trend to six-figure salaries is occurring throughout the federal government, in agencies big and small, high-tech and low-tech. The primary cause: substantial pay raises and new salary rules.

"There's no way to justify this to the American people. It's ridiculous," says Rep. Jason Chaffetz, R-Utah, a first-term lawmaker who is on the House's federal workforce subcommittee.

9. Wait just a minute. Workers have a choice of working for the government or the private sector.
Stability is the benefit of working for the federal government. In good times the private sector pays better than the government, but in bad times the federal government provides stability for it's workers while the private sector may lay it's workers off. No fair picking on the federal employees when the private sector fails their employees.

10. Thanks for pointing that out
In a world where Wall Street execs make more money than God, picking on "government mules" who make 70k seems like a misdirection.

11. And another thing. The highest paid federal employees are earning in the 150,000
dollar range compared to the private sector where their counter parts, the CEO's are make 150 million, as much as ten times more.
