About the Show

Democracy is not a spectator sport. Using dramatic and musical performances of the letters, diaries and speeches of everyday Americans, THE PEOPLE SPEAK gives voice to those who spoke up for social change throughout U.S. history, forging a nation from the bottom up with their insistence on equality and justice. Narrated by Howard Zinn and based on his best-selling books, A People's History of the United States and Voices of a People's History of the United States, THE PEOPLE SPEAK illustrates the relevance of these passionate historical moments to our society today and reminds us never to take liberty for granted

6. Revolution followed by slavery? Sounds about right....
.... Remember, Zinn is not telling history the way it's been taught in textbooks, but through the voices of those who've been ignored.

he'd skipped over about 100 years of history. The pace got better after that first segment.

and I'm quite impressed.

Naturally, I liked the Union segment from the 1930's and Eugene Debs' speech. but, that's just me.

10. Oh, so THAT's why Comcast picked this week to scramble all the QAM channels.
When even the Hearst corporation's "History Channel" allows the truth to be spoken (which is rare on that channel) it figures that Comcast would find a way to keep me from seeing it. Lousy bastards.

Hopefully it will turn up online somewhere soon......

15. Saw it - recorded it - Fantastic
This was a very nicely done documentary, with stage performances intercut with archival footage and photos.

In a 2-hour broadcast, it's impossible to do justice to Zinn's whole book, but this hit a lot of the highlights.

Like the book, it leaves you with the irrefutable conviction that this country is run for the benefit of the rich few at the expense of the hard-working many--but that whenever the ripped-off, the stomped-upon, the industrious but just-barely-scraping-by masses get together to fight back, things get a little better. And it makes me appreciate with fresh eyes the incredible hardships and bravery of those who gave so much to make our lives better today.

Zinn is a real American hero. I hope this will inspire more people to read http://www.powells.com/biblio/1-9780060838652-1">A People's History of the United States.

30. used book stores, goodwill, mission and thrift stores etc
are great places to hunt for bargain priced books and classics. It does require a lot of time and patience, which I have little of right now. :)

Your Mom will surely love it, I cannot wait to get my hands on one.

26. I watched it. Loved it. Very moving. For me, the story of the woman grabbing the bullhorn
when the cops started shooting strikers was overwhelming emotionally. Such courage these folks had in the face of ruthless power! Frederick Douglass' speech was another great one. As well as the couple whose son died on 9-11.

It's a must-see for anyone who wants this country to be a democracy.

But, it's not for everyone. My wife said it didn't grab her. Oh well.

RECOMMEND. Thanks for posting this G_j

It is true--
I've always loved
the daring
ones
Like the black young
man
Who tried
to crash
All barriers
at once,
wanted to
swim
At a white
beach (in Alabama)
Nude.

33. Read A People's History... and loved the documentary.
Howard Zinn is one of my greatest influences. He HAS NOT "revised history" as some on the right (and even some liberals...) may claim, he has helped give the people back a history that was already our own. A wonderful contribution to our collective consciousness.

A fascinating look at history from the point of view of slaves, workers, indians, women, and regular people. Highly recommended.

Featured musical performances by Eddie Vedder, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen and others. Readings of speeches performed by Viggo Mortenson, Matt Damon, Morgan Freeman and many others.

Highly recommended.

-Andy

An earlier version aired on Democracy Now! years ago, I have it in AToday's video archive:
