The Nation sent me to collections AFTER i canceled twice on the phone
I subscribed to The Nation after a plea to support them. And took my subscription online to save them cost and save a tree or two.

Then I became severely under-employed and didn't renew my subscription. I called on the phone and was told my subscription was canceled. I called TWICE, as the online version kept landing in my email.

Then I get the dreaded letter in the mail... COLLECTIONS!

Couldn't they just stop sending me The Nation?

This is exactly why I canceled my accounts and paid off my credit card with CHASE BANK. I hope The Nation goes belly-up now. I don't need this at Christmas time, trying to scrape by, getting screwed at every turn for playing by the rules and working hard. I'm so sick of this crap. I don't think Rupert Murdoch would have done his benefactors this way.

It's like the old joke...

What's the difference between liberals and cannibals?

Cannibals don't eat their own.

1. Wow
That sucks, they are screwing you and you did the right thing. I would call the nation magazine ceo and tell them I will sue them if they don't stop this at once!

4. I've been getting 'past due' bills even tho I did not renew subscription.
If they turn me over to a collector, say good-bye to the Nation cuz I won't put up with that crap, especially when I did not get all the issues for they subscription I had paid for. That was why I didn't renew, they didn't send issues.

I love the magazine, but seems they have turned over mailing and billing to less than honest sub-contractor or something.

5. They WILL send you to collections, ya better write
They sent me the same past due notices. That's why I called, and called again, and emailed - to cancel my subscription. They told me on the phone, more than once, that it was canceled.

I wrote to 2 different addresses. I didn't think I'd have to do this with The Nation, but be advised. Treat them like a Chase Credit Card. I'm now thinking of sending them a USPS Return Receipt Requested.

I think I'll cancel my ACLU membership now too before they send me to collections too. I'm pissed!

My kid's school district threatened to send me to collections when WaMu failed and I switched banks from Chase. It was for PRE-PAID school lunches. I didn't owe them, it was a pre-payment. I explained the banking crisis pinch point and they sent me a warning that now I only have 10 days before I go to collections.
I will vote against the next school levy for the first time in my life!

6. a regular letter will not do...
Edited on Mon Dec-14-09 10:13 PM by winyanstaz
To get their attention...mail your letters via: registered mail...and put a note on the bottom that a copy will be going to your lawyer (and the CEO).
When the company has to SIGN for the notice...then they can't say they didn't get it..and they know it will hold up in court.
Also send a registered copy to the CEO of the company and make HIM sign for it too.
Whenever a little man or woman in a company gives your grief...you just go over their heads to the next one up the totem pole. Sooner or later the heads at the bottom start to roll.

7. I think I will do that, sadly
I have to treat The Nation as Chase Bank! WTF is this all coming to? I'm afraid to get ensnared in anything that used to simple and easy.

8. I have been hearing rumers of a number of companies doing that same thing...
People cant get their subsciptions cancelled or stop the automatic payments once they authorize one.
I paid off all my credit cards and now I only use cash. If I can't afford to pay right away...I don't get it.

9. I'm having the same problem with Sprint. Two times as well.
I did a thirty day trial with them, cancelled (twice) and just got a five-hundred dollar bill from them and they are insisting that I never canceled...

10. Were they bought out by AOL or something?
I remember trying to help someone get off AOL to a regular ISP. AOL WOULD NOT take No for an answer. And continued to bill this ex-customer.

11. This may sound funny but they don't REALLY mean it.

The same thing happened to me with The Nation. I was getting ready to mail the "collection" payment but I decided to call to see if I could pay on-line to save a stamp. Lucky I called.

Get this: The fricking recording said "we are not a collection agency. If you would like to cancel, please press 1. If you would like to renew, press 2"

The nice lady on the phone canceled my membership and waived the outstanding charge without hesitation.

The recording even went on to say they don't report to the credit bureau.

Seriously.

Not that it makes their shady practices any better but I had to laugh at their nerve.

I was flabbergasted AND astounded at the balls it took to pull that shit.

12. The Nation's chutzpa will give me schadenfreude
I'm not getting this at all. Firms are selling the rope to hang themselves. I'm done. Doing business recently is like climbing onto a spiderweb.

13. So I just spent 40 minutes and 5 precious dollars to cancel my non-renewed subscription...
$5 postage and 40 minutes as my family and I patiently languished in a line at the post office during Christmas rush.
I sent a cancellation letter "return Receipt" so I can sue The Nation if they continue down the collections road with me.
That gas used by me, the USPS trucks and planes, and paperwork with the letters I sent -ruined my effort to go green with an online subscription.

I am happily tossing all requests for donations in the recycle. It never felt good before. Merry Christmas to The Nation!

14. When you called and canceled did you write a note stating when you called and to whom you spoke?
If you were an adult and responsible, you'd have a written record and would be able to provide that.

15. This time, yes. Didn't think I needed to protect myself from The Nation before this
Edited on Tue Dec-15-09 08:11 PM by upi402
But I played it like canceling a mobile phone contract or a credit card this time around.
I included the name of the woman I spoke to, and her supervisor's name, in the written cancellation instruction - and sent it Return Receipt. I'll send a copy to my lawyer with a copy of my phone log from my previous cancellation call.

The haven't replied to my emails yet, so that's not the way to go, if anyone has the same situation. You need to treat them just like a predatory company. I'd suggest not getting entangled with The Nation.

I am an adult and very responsible. You blame the victim just like a Republican. You are judgmental too, but from your sig line I'm not surprised.
