The wording of the First Amendment itself clearly indicates that the founders did not wish to simply prohibit the creation of a State church. Inserting Rita’s interpretation the Establishment and Free Exercise Clauses it would read: “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of a State Church, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof.” They did not want to protect the free exercise of a church that they prohibited the creation of, among other reasons because it would make no sense whatsoever.
