Petraeus Accuses Iran of Aiding Afghan Taliban
Source: ABC News

Gen. David Petraeus has accused Iran of still backing Shiite militants in Iraq and giving a "modest level" support -- including explosives -- to the Taliban in Afghanistan.

"Iran continues to fund, train, equip, and give some direction to the residual Shiite militias and extremists elements in Iraq," he told ABC News.

"There are daily attacks with the so-called signature weapons only made by Iran – the explosively formed projectile, forms of improvised explosive devices, etc.," he said. The general said that while overall attacks are down 90 percent in Iraq, militants are aiming for periodic high profile attacks that attract media attention.

Iraq has been rocked in recent days by a series of deadly car bombings in the heart of Baghdad.

Petraeus, head of the U.S. Central Command, said Iran was also aiding Taliban elements in Afghanistan, despite long-standing animosity between the Iranian Shiites and the extremist Sunnis in Afghanistan.

4. So, our situation in Afghanistan is comparable to the Russians?
One of the most often cited arguments about the difference between the two involvements is that the Taliban, today, do not have weapon support from a developed country. Now, we have this story and the intercepted North Korean weapon's delivery going somewhere, likely Pakistan.

5. Shi'as helping out Sunnis
Uh huh. Right.

The Pentagon simply won't rest until WWIII has been ignited and the world's a charred cinder. Awfully convenient of Viceroy Petraeus to ignore the "modest level" (of) support we've given some of the worst regimes on Earth, all for profits in relatively few hands.

War is a racket.

:grr:

8. Just a sidenote as to how shitty journalism has gotten
No where in that story does it say WHEN he said it , WHO he said it to, WHERE he said it, Why he said it (in response to someone's question?, etc).

I guess from the video picture off to the side you could assume he's saying it in the context of a Congressional hearing, but you would never know that from the story itself.

10. Good point.
It repeatedly says "told ABC News", and that is as far as the details of the conversation go.
