Phoenix Greyhound Park to close
Source: The Arizona Republic

For decades, fans have headed to Phoenix Greyhound Park for the thrill of wagering on dog races. That tradition ends this month.

The park near Washington and 40th streets is closing. It will host its last live races Saturday and show its last simulcast races Dec. 31.

It's been a poignant week for patrons and employees, manager Dan Luciano said.

Some firms moved up their holiday-party dates so that they could catch one of the final live races, park officials say.

1. I just hope there isn't a mass extinction of greyhounds
with piles of bones found out in the desert.

2. GREAT NEWS! I would guess that the dogs are not among those that are sad about this.

7. I know several people who have rescued retired racers..and they all say the same thing.
..and..that they really are like potato chips. You cannot have just one!! :D

I would definitely take at least 2.

14. Good I am glad that place is closing down
Because the only thing worse that exploiting people for profit is exploiting defenseless animals for profit, sport etc. If you want to see or run your dogs in a race or coursing event check an ASFA or LGRA event near you.

15. I have a retired greyhound, Hex, and she is weird and wonderful
Her older "brother" Sam died a year ago - one day he was fine and running in the back yard and the next he just died. The vet figured it was a massive stroke based on the symptoms. Sam was one of the best dogs I've ever owned and I miss him to this day. Greyhounds truly are 40 mile an hour couch potatoes who just want to be petted and loved and kept warm, preferably with one of their humans cuddled close. I hope that all the dogs at this track find good forever homes. I wish I were in a position to adopt one.
