1. Ouch. Old infrastructure strikes again. We had a pretty large

water main break here in Saint Paul a couple of weeks ago. It infiltrated sewer lines and pumped several homes' basements full of sewage. Wonderful stuff.

I think some people drowned when they were swept off the road and into the river, IIRC.

4. Yep. Water mains over 100 years old are just flat going to fail.

We've put replacement off way too long.

2. I hear ya.

There are mini geysers throughout the city. Half the pipes below in New Orleans are busted, both drinking and sewage lines (laterals and trunk lines). So, lots of infiltration of polluted water into drinking water lines and vice versa.

Some streets look like the surface of the Moon.

5. Had one in my little town yesterday.... water off from 5AM till the late afternoon

6. I was expecting this to be about Pittsburgh since they had another big one.

They seem to get more than their share. The last few years seem to have been even worse, but with all of the aging infrastructure nationwide, I know that they're not alone.

7. The worst part is that the cities are hugely affected by the current

economy. There's no money for replacing this stuff. Personally, I think the stimulus money should have gone to projects like that, instead of into the banker's pockets. At least it would have created some jobs and benefited people.

8. I couldn't agree more.

I actually thought that infrastructure was one of the top two or three things that the stimulus would impact the fastest. So naive of me.
Pittsburgh has also had problems with some of the older bridges. The parkways in and out of town seem to be in a nearly constant construction mode also.

It looked all nice and shiny for the G20, but they really need a large infusion of cash for the necessary repairs. They have nice new venues for the pro sports teams, and a nice shiny new casino, but it can be a pain to get to them.
