I hope all DU'ers reflect a bit before throwing money at MoveOn
Edited on Thu Dec-17-09 04:36 PM by Vinnie From Indy
It is being reported all over the place that MoveOn has hit the million dollar mark after a call to donate to work against Joe Liberman's re-election in 2012. While the sentiment is a good one, it is also opportunism at it's finest. Strike while the iron is hot is certainly a truism, but is the target in this case really the right one? Connecticut has no recall mechanism so that is not an option and it could very well be that given a bit more time Lieberman's already weak internal numbers in CT will drop further making his re-election unlikely regardless of how much money is poured into the state by MoveOn.

I would offer that the million dollars raised would be far better spent targeting Senators like Nelson, Evan Bayh and a few others. That money could also be better spent, in my opinion, on providing much needed cash to TRUE Progressive candidates around the country running in the next election.

I think the folks in CT will continue to lose faith in Lieberman and he would lose even if he intended to run.

On edit: Or, give it to the DU family!!! :)

2. I'd rather have Lieberman gone than Nelson or Bayh.
It's worth $20 to me.

7. Too much waste there. I'm going to wait and donate directly
to viable opponents.

9. I have always been leery of MOVE ON - it seems to like to initiate
Campaigns for Cash flow in, and then I never hear about whether the money ever went where it was suppsoed to.

What state are they holding their foundation charter in? Have they ever been audited?

They also had no interest in the Voting Machine Issue.

It is also impossible to contact any one that emails you. They email you, but you cannot email them and ever get any type of personal response.

13. I don't know about that. I have always focused my efforts on
individual candidates, primarily in my own state. I start long before the primaries, and work to get candidates I like nominated by the party. Then, I campaign for them and donate what I can in money to that campaign.

I do donate to out-of-area candidates when they show promise of being able to win with some help.

I donate to no national organizations at all. That money is pretty much wasted, as far as I can see.

10. I won't take exception with anything
but the sentence about the folks in CT. Many on this board, myself included, said the same thing about the last election. Yet, there he is today more powerful than ever and suffering no consequences for his actions. Please excuse me if I don't share your optimism about the CT voters.

12. I posted the link to the MoveOn/Lieberman page, and made it a point to
say I was not soliciting donations. I wanted to bring it to people's attention, mostly in hope that it would inspire others to start moving to defeat some of the scum Democrats in the Senate.

14. I respond to MoveOn on a case by case basis.
Sometimes they're right on target, at other times they're not. Sometimes they react too quickly and this may be one of them. BUT they have a huge emailing list and they are very good at raising money for an ad quickly. I'd rather see them put up a pro-public option ad with the money they are raising now.
