OK, seriously: Barack Obama may not be smarter than EVERYONE here, but he's smarter than 99% of the people here, knows how the US government functions, and oh yes, knows that the self-described progressive 'base' is probably 15% of the electorate on a good day, and adding moderate liberals gets that up to 30%.

Fact is that progressive positions on the issues poll with majority- and often substantial majority support, time and again. What this means, of course that a majority of the country is progressive (whether they describe themselves that way or not).
