When the mandate goes through, I'm just wondering...
...how many out there have every intention of refusing to pay up?

1. I don't know.
But is it consistent to refuse to pay in this case, if one wasn't planning on becoming a "tax protestor" if single payer went though?

BTW, I have been pushing single payer from the word go, and I still am.

2. "But is it consistent to refuse..."
Why would this matter?

3. Without such consistency, wouldn't there be hypocrisy of a pointless sort?

4. I think this really just depends on whether one wishes to to focus on the similarities or the
differences between the two boycotts.

If you want this act to be a hypocritical act, then it can be; and if you want this act to be a non-hypocritical act, then it can be. The choice is up to you.

6. I doubt I'll be able to pay.
I suspect a lot of people will be in the same boat.

The individual mandate is a really bad idea, and the Democratic Party will pay for it dearly if it forces this bitter pill down the throats of the American people.

Forcing people to buy insurance is no more the solution to a failed health care system than forcing people to buy houses is the solution to homelessness.

16. Based upon my current income and expenses.
Edited on Thu Dec-17-09 08:21 PM by Laelth
And based upon the subsidy tables I have seen. For me and my wife (both uninsured), I will need to pay out approximately $4,000.00 per year for insurance. I can assure you that, unless my financial situation improves dramatically over the next year, I will not be able to afford that extra expense.

And link to the costs of not having insurance?

26. I saw the table here on DU about 2 months ago.
I have no idea what you're referring to in regards to "the costs of not having insurance." My wife and I have not seen doctors in years, so we don't have that expense figured into our current expenses.

Of course, the President tells me that uninsured people add about $1,000.00 per year to the costs of each person who pays for insurance. He like to make us feel like Cadillac Queens who are exploiting the system. Not a winning argument, imho.

9. I'd rather piss away $750 a year to the government than many times that to the insurance mafia.
Especially when the level of services I'll be receiving is effectively identical.

15. Being Canadian, don't shoot me if I don't understand this mandate
But isn't a mandate a recipe for disaster for the Health Care plan?

There is probably not a lot of disposable income in many families perhaps caught up in credit card debt etc..

Some people may just prefer to buy cigarettes or gins and tonics... :)

34. What does "mandated private insurance" mean?
I think that any subsidies are going to be budget breakers and will be inadequate to start with and will be rapidly curtailed.

We really don't have any idea what the final legislation (if any) will look like and by the time we do have a clue it will be too late to do anything about it.

After watching the games that have been played in the legislature over this issue I have zero trust in them to do anything that will help out the average American.

28. Because you're used to living under a government that sees the well-being of its
citizens as its primary purpose and objective. We, however, live under a government wholly owned by corporate America, that sees its purpose as transferring as much of the country's wealth and resources into the hands of a tiny number of individuals as quickly and thoroughly as possible. In your country, people are seen as having value as human beings. In ours, people are seen as something to squeeze every last cent out of to give to people who are already obscenely wealthy, and then die when they're of no further use.

18. I get Medicaid right now, but my partner doesn't and she's not paying.
They can try to fine us, but they won't get very far. Can't get orange juice out of a cow. If they send her to jail, at least she'll have healthcare--and I'll be speaking and blogging about it everywhere that I can. We won't be silent victims.
