You put a restriction on abortion into the health care bill, and the bill doesn't pass. You lose 13 votes right there.

Add to that Roland Burris, who's said he won't vote for a bill that doesn't have a public option, and a few others (Sanders? Feingold?), and it doesn't matter if you get cloture or not. The bill won't pass. It doesn't even matter if you get Snowe and Collins.

Stuff it, Nelson.

2. The bill not passing is not threatening to Nelson.
He doesn't lose anything by it not passing.

4. Good point
I wonder if any pressure would be put on him to drop his pet project. After all, the liberals have been asked to give up everything.

6. Pass a HC bill that gives drug benefits to all women...
And access to birth control pills, and just watch the number of abortions go way down.

There will be abortions, always, regardless of the laws. Just like there will always be murders and thievery and rape and embezzlement. The laws don't keep crimes from happening, they are merely a means of exacting punishment. Their argument against abortion benefits is ridiculous.
