Something has to start the process. As Krugman noted, every time a healthcare bill has come back after a defeat, it's come back in a weaker form. At this rate, the next bill will start out even worse than this one is now, so it's better to start with what we've got and try to improve it, rather than starting again from scratch.

Sure, everyone here can draft 100 better bills than the one currently rattling through the Senate, but we can either try to work with what we have or accept the likelihood that its successor will be even worse.


Krugman's a hell of a lot smarter than I am in these matters, so I'm willing to accept his assessment.

Well .... except for the voting *machines* ..... but you get the idea.

The concept is a good one. The problem is the bill as it exists today. Look at the phase-ins. This is an act of kicking the can down the road for the benefits, but immediate profiteering for the insurance companies.

5. Well, at the risk of going to the well too often...

Krugman noted that, with this bill, 30 million will have some coverage where they currently have nothing. That's a start.

I'm certainly not thrilled that the insurance companies are getting another (huge) handout, but if it gives some comfort to those 30 million, I'm content that it's a start and that, several generations later, it will work better.
