ST. PAUL, Neb. — Six dogs were found along State Highway 92 east of here Thursday, and the owner of the mixed-breed Great Pyrenees- St. Bernard dogs has been referred to the Howard County attorney for prosecution.
Deputies traced them to the Josh Bernt farm in Howard County, Sheriff Harold Schenck said. Two frozen cats, two dead calves and several neglected horses and goats were found on the farm, authorities said. Deputies speculated that the dogs had been eating dead animals.
Deputies, responding to a passer-by's call, kept the dogs safely off the highway until animal control officers could arrive from Grand Island.
Laurie Dethloff, executive director of the Central Nebraska Humane Society, said the dogs were very scared, cold and hungry. “They're friendly, but they aren't used to a lot of human contact.”
She said it was unclear whether the dogs had been dumped or wandered away in search of food.
