First, it was it will pass well to the South

Then, it was snow showers...

Now, it is light snow....

So, my guess is that we will get at least half a foot.

The last storm was suppossed to be light ice and rain, we got 7 1/2" of snow. When they forecast rain, we get snow. When they forecast snow, we get rain. It is almost comical. The last storm, they put up at the top of the forecast 'very complicated system so difficult to pin down type of accumulation and snow amounts'.

They just guess!

(8-12" of snow is a minor snowstorm in these parts - it takes two feet to be taken seriously and three feet to be considered truly big)!

When they forecast a nor'easter the likes of which has never ever been seen in the history of humankind, we get blue skies, bright sunshine, summer-like temperatures, and cute little birds pulling rainbows behind them. Indeed, weather forecasting around these parts is comical. B-)

We're not exactly calm in the face of approaching snow, but when I worked with people from DC...yowza. One time I was supposed to be in DC to work and it was supposed to snow. Figured I'd wait and see what happened. Next morning I got up and the road crews seemed pretty on top of things, so I dug the car out and headed south. No problems, wet road the whole way. I get to our office in No Va, and me and one secretary were the only ones who showed up. All day.

On the other hand, I was in Boston for a blizzard one day. It was a Sunday morning until about noon. I slept in at the hotel and then went to a 2:00 event at the Fleet Center. Roads cleared, sidewalks cleared, it was like hundreds of elves came out and cleaned the place up in two hours. Philadelphia does not look like that two WEEKS after a snow storm.

We learned our lesson well. That storm caught the entire eastern seaboard flat-footed and wiped us out for a week. My mom (DUer Raven) was in charge of plowing in the town I grew up in. The storm hit, and I didn't see her for five days. I was sledding with friends out the second-story window of my baby-sitter's apartment.

After that, Boston learned how to deal with the aftermath of big storms.

National (NEVER Reagan) Airport had 18.7 inches. We had a microburst directly over Annandale, VA, where I was living at the time, and we woke up to 33 inches of snow in our front yard.
(And the region didn't learn a fucking thing about how to deal with the aftermath of big storms.)

I was a student at GMU, living in Annandale then, too, right off the Beltway near Fairfax Hospital. We couldn't get out the front door because of the drifts. We were in a 3 story TH (walk out basement). We had to shovel out through the back yard, around the end of the complex, into the cul-de-sac, up the front walk. There was no place to put the shoveled snow. I'm only 5'5". so I was more or less tunneling 'cause the snow was over my head. I felt like a mole!

I wouldn't be surprised if the actual accumulation varies greatly across the region.

I recall other storms where parts of Northern Virginia and Maryland got dumped on and other parts got a fraction of what fell in other places.

Not taking anything for granted but I wouldn't be surprised if it turned out to be less than forecast either.

Valdez shrugs as snowfall tops 6 feet

Go ahead, grumble about the snowstorm that socked the Anchorage area this week. Depending on your side of town, and not counting the Hillside, the official tally is between 5.5 and 20 inches.

Now, put your ear to your freshly shoveled driveway, and you'll hear Valdez residents laughing.

"My God, our people don't even get out of bed for that, and I'm not kiddin' ya," said longtime resident Tom McAlister.

Snow started falling in Valdez early Monday morning and continued to fall like crazy. At one point on Tuesday, 4.8 inches fell in an hour. By Wednesday, 68.2 inches had piled up.

"On my tippy toes I could look over the top of it," said McAlister, who is 5-foot-8.

That makes it the second highest three-day snowfall on record for the town of 4,020, with top honors going to Feb. 4, 1996, when 74.6 inches fell over three days.

But snow deep enough to swallow McAlister wasn't the end of it. As of Thursday afternoon, the inch count was up to 76.5 -- 6 feet, 4.5 inches -- and, though slowing down, snow continued to fall.

In the 33 years Strang has been teaching in Valdez, the schools have never been closed on account of snow. All those years, they've only shut down three times, he said, and that was due to wind.

Washington will grind to a halt if that happens. I was there for the Presidents' Day blizzard in '79. Took us days to dig out. We had 3ft of snow with 5ft drifts. It was beautiful, but there was no way to get around in it.
