1. Not bad
and they didn't take the bailout money.

Kind of makes you think that buying out GM wasn't necessary to save the american auto industry.

2. I dont know
I think if they would have let GM and Chrysler go down I think Ford could have been next in line.

11. Why?
Are they helped by having greater domestic competition?

13. Because letting GM and Chrysler go...
would've taken down many, many suppliers. Ford, as well as foreign companies, would have been hurt since they wouldn't have been able to get parts for their vehicles. We would be sinking into a deep depression if GM and Chrysler not been saved.

14. That's the speculative argument being made
to prop up what seems to be a failing company, in a market where others are clearly making it. I'm not buying it.

17. Nonsense
If you think eliminating over a million of jobs from the economy wouldn't have had an effect, you are clueless.

Some people on DU won't be happy until GM and Chrysler are gone.

GM is not a failing company and has even seen its market share increase after bankruptcy.

25. Your argument presupposes
that without the bailout GM would have failed. That is easily countered by pointing out fords success.

Likely GM would have been forced to restructure and become more efficient, rather than collapsed outright.

27. How does "Ford's success" coutner what I said?
Ford didn't need government funding because they took out loans before the credit crisis, not because they were doing great.

Where would the money have come from to get GM through bankruptcy without the government's assistance?

3. My 90 year old dad is buying a Ford F-250 pick-up truck today!
My brother (who lives with dad) will be the primary driver. Dad's old Chevy S-10 has finally flamed out. He says he needs a nice truck to haul his fishing gear to his farm pond and to the beach.

This is the truck he is buying:

5. The Ford Family is still involved in Ford management
Not saying they are saints but the fact they have a family pride in the company, prevents it from following the path of GM and Chrysler.

I think it's way more than 300%. I bought at 1.50 right after the election last year and my stock was up to 8.00 last time I checked a few weeks ago.

16. You've had those since at least March of 2005, yes?
I'm wondering if you had considered picking up more when it dropped below $5.00 last November?

In case you weren't aware, those notes are now what are known as "continuously callable" with 30 days notice. They became so on October 11, 2006.

http://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/38009/000095012401503452/k65228b2e424b2.htm

(page S-3 under "Redemption")

Even though their credit rating has been trashed, they're still good notes. If you've owned them since '05, you've made about two bucks more in interest than the loss of principal at the current price. ($1.84/yr times 4 years = $7.36 per share in interest up to last March) They're still a fairly long bond, however, maturing in October of 2031

Nicely done.

I show that its low was 6.2200 on 03/05/2009.

My UBS broker told me to buy it. That was before all the shit at UBS happened and I moved everything over to Fidelity.

How close it will increase to $25 before they call it?

24. They would only call them if they could re-issue new debt at a lower cost
That's unlikely given those notes are rated Caa1/CCC+ by Moodys/S&P. Either way, it would probably have to trade at that $25.00 par level or above before they would call them in.

Yahoo Financial shows a low of $4.26 the week of Nov. 17, 2008, but it was a rather sharp spike down and then back up.

12. I've never owned anything but a Ford.
My husband and his family have and their foreign jobbies are always in the shop, while one of my Mustangs went 10 years without the need for breaks and 12 years before any trip to the shop outside of maintenance (and that was only to replace a sensor).

Yay Ford!!

Here's my (newer) pride n' joy:

I saw a 2010 Mondeo complete with right side steering driving on Outer Drive a few weeks ago. I sure hope it's being considered for US release...
