One Third Of Dems Less Likely To Vote In 2010 If Public Option Dies

Greg Sargent reports:

I was sent an advance look at these numbers by the Progressive Change Campaign Committee and Democracy for America, which commissioned the poll from the nonpartisan Research 2000 and will release the results later this morning. The poll asks:

If Congress does not pass a public option as part of health care reform, will that make you more likely or less likely to vote in the 2010 general election, or no effect?

Among Dems, 33% say it would make them less likely, while less than one fourth that amount, 7%, say it would make them more likely. Sixty percent say it would have no effect.

Among independent voters, 21% say it would make them less likely, and 13% say it would make them more likely, with 66% saying it would have no effect, suggesting that passing a public option would have a marginal impact among indys.

Not voting is just as much an exercise in the political process as voting...if I have a choice between two bad options, I don't have an obligation to support one over the other...my vote must be earned, not taken for granted.

It is a black hole of a comment. It subtly implies the people who care will never win and activism is unworthy of their efforts because the apathetic will always win. I know I didn't necessarily argue this well, the thought is still trying to coalesce, but there is something especially despair inducing about your choice of phrase.

President Obama increased my resolve to support him during the campaign when he said we focus too much on what is, rather than making reality what should be, or something very similar. MLK had a dream, lots of your fellow Americans have dreams, when we stop dreaming then I think we will have given up. And assuming that you aren't addressing a lot of active Dems on DU who are also dreamers is a mistake.

How my rep(D) votes on the issues that concern me, decides how I'll vote.
