A word for people who are out driving in the Mid-Atlantic states today
Edited on Fri Dec-18-09 03:57 PM by taterguy
Don't.

Seriously. It's nasty out there.

The cars are slipping and sliding like they've got the Saint Vitus Dance.

I hope you like where you're at because you shouldn't be going anywhere for a while.

Unless you've got a good pair of boots.

And stop surfing DU while driving. Eyes on the road please.

Thank you.

4. You could drive one of these...

But with the present weather forecast, I would suggest putting up the convertible top!

"Slip, slidin away..." by Paul Simon ;)

Not gloating... Denver has had quite a bit of snow to date, but today is a lovely temperate day...

Stay safe, east coasters...

5. Good advice-----it can get really nasty and really dangerous.
I had a friend killed some years ago in just 1" of slippery snow. A large truck on the opposite side of the 2 lane road went into a skid and went into my friend's car.

Scary stuff.

Dancing mania (or choreomania,<1> from the Greek: χορεία (khoreia = 'dance') + μανία (mania = 'madness’) was a social phenomenon that occurred primarily in mainland Europe between the 14th and 18th centuries; it involved groups of people, sometimes thousands at a time, who danced uncontrollably and bizarrely. Men, women, and children would dance through the streets of towns or cities, sometimes foaming at the mouth until they collapsed from fatigue.

Cool!

7. Good advice.
There are plenty of reports of car accidents out there, even down here in Atlanta.

Be careful, everyone! :hi:

9. Here's a simple rule for driving in slippery conditions;
Drive as if there is an egg taped to the bottom of your right shoe. Never push on your gas or brake harder than it would take to break the egg.

This changes the way you go about accelerating and braking because you have to look down the road much further and do more anticipation than you normally would.

Also, don't assume ANYONE else is using this same rule.

11. If you do that on an ice or a snow covered road...
you really aren't going to help the situation.

So yes, I suppose it is a good thing you rarely drive.

16. More advice:
Leave plenty of room between you and the car in front of you.

If you start to skid, turn your wheels in the direction of the skid, take your foot off the gas and keep it off the brake. Let gravity slow you down.

If you get stuck in blizzard like conditions and are running the engine, be sure to clear the area around the exhaust pipe often to prevent carbon monoxide build-up in you auto; otherwise, you might wake up dead.

Have a winter emergency kit in your car in case you get bogged down, etc.

Consumer Reports has a good article about emergency kits:

http://www.consumerreports.org/cro/cars/tires-auto-parts/auto-parts/roadside-emergency-kit-what-to-carry-with-you-1105/overview/index.htm

Good luck and stay safe!

23. LOL - Carolinians Worried About Driving In Snow....

Okay, now I understand.

Yes, if I were in the Carolinas, and it were snowing, I wouldn't want to find out what happens when y'all get off of the oval track and onto actual roads.

I was wondering what the worry was over some snow.

26. Mario Andretti couldn't drive on this stuff
There's about a foot of snow on the ground; mixed with ice and sleet to make it extra slick.

Besides, about half the drivers in North Carolina are transplanted Yankees.

They cause the accidents, because they think they know how to drive on snow.
