Senate Races in 2010
The partisan playing field for the 2010 Senate elections is even, with the Republicans defending 18 seats and the Democrats also defending 18 -- including two in New York, which has both a special election and a regularly scheduled election, and the Pennsylvania seat gained by Sen. Arlen Specter's April 2009 switch to the Democratic Party.

There is one additional special election, to be held on Jan. 19, in which the Democrats are strongly favored to hold the Massachusetts seat vacated by the death of Democratic Sen. Edward M. Kennedy.

We're at a low point now. I suspect it'll look a lot better for Democrats when we get closer to Nov. 2010.

This is not 1994. The political dynamic is very different.

Of course, if we pass this disastrous "insurance reform" bill, things could get a lot worse for us. People will hate the individual mandate, and the Democratic Party will almost certainly be punished for it (and rightly so).

Kill the bill.

Forcing people to buy insurance is no more the answer to a failed health care system than forcing people to buy houses is the solution to homelessness.

4. My predictions:

We lose Delaware. Sorry, Mike Castle is too popular. Of course, that means we'll pick up his House seat.

We lose Connecticut. Dodd is too in bed with the financials and insurance companies to energize the Democratic base there.

Republicans hold Kentucky. Duh.

Worst case scenario is Democrats 55, Republicans 43, Independent 2. Best case? Democrats 59, Republicans 39, Independent 2. Somewhere between the two lies the likely outcome.
