When does the mandate kick in? Insurance companies have until 2014
before they have to start covering those with pre-existing conditions so there must be an exemptio for those folks, right?

I predict a big fat mess.

1. Indeed. A big fat mess.

Kill the bill.

Forcing people to buy insurance is no more the answer to a failed health care system than forcing people to buy houses is the solution to homelessness.

2. Really!
And the much-vaunted subsidies don't kick in either.

3. So, do I still get fined if they won't cover me? Because I have a pre-list longer than my arm.

5. NO! The pre-existing condition part goes into effect right away.
I think the main thing that will take until 2014 are the subsidies. That's the way they managed to make the bill deficit neutral.

6. But the insurance companies will still be allowed to charge extra for
Edited on Sat Dec-19-09 01:30 PM by Lydia Leftcoast
pre-existing conditions, twice their base charge in the House bill and four times the base charge in the Senate bill. However, no limits are placed on the base charges.

My prediction: They will take advantage of the captive market to raise the base premiums for everyone so that they can REALLY rake in the dough from the people with pre-existing conditions or the ones over 50.

7. I don't know. Too many things are changing and still uncertain.
I think we have to wait to see what comes out of committee after they merge the house & senate bills. The only sliver I heard was from Reid today when he said there are ins. co. price conntrols in the bill.

8. Mark my words... they will kill the pre-exempting conditions clause
The anti-health care reform people keep saying the bill is not final and the "obama basher" are bitching about nothing. Well, they are right about the bill not being finished and when it's done it's going to be even worse.
Insurance companies will either get the pre-exempting condition clause removed or get it capped so high no one can afford it.

9. The Kaiser Family Foundation website has a PDF with
side-by-side comparisons of the House and Senate bills.
