Today we paid a visit to United HealthCare CEO Stephen Hemsley
As the CEO of insurance industry giant United HealthCare Stephen Hemsley has encouraged his employees to be engaged in the political process and fight for a health care system that requires individuals to buy private insurance under penalty of law and offers them no public option. In a letter sent out on November 10th United HealthCare employees were encouraged to write letters to the editor supporting private insurance mandates, a template for a suggested letter which was provided by United HealthCare included the following talking point:

As many have said, now is the time for health care reform, and I believe that there is a way to effectively modernize the system.  While I am writing to you as an individual, and the opinion I express is my own, I work at UnitedHealth Group, a company that has proposed market reforms that will guarantee quality, affordable and portable coverage for all, regardless of gender, health status, or pre-existing conditions.  However, as we have learned from experiences in various states, in order for these market reforms to be successful, they must be accompanied by an effective personal coverage requirement.

Today the Senate health care bill is looking very much like the system that Hemsley's company was lobbying for. It looks like Hemsley is on the verge of a major victory, and after getting paid more than $16 million in total compensation since 2007 and sitting on $744 million in stock options it is looking like Hemsley is about to get a lot richer as a result of his company's lobbying efforts and the continued denial of his customers' claims.

Because Hemsley loves lobbying so much we decided that we should lobby him. Unfortunately however United HealthCare does not allow us to stand outside the corporate boardrooms to speak with Hemsley directly, so instead we decided to go take a walk across the frozen surface of Lake Minnetonka to the shore where Hemsley's $6,600,000 mansion is located.

Unlike Hemsley we were not asking for a mandate forcing individuals to buy private insurance, instead the only mandate that we are pushing for is a mandate that all Americans are able to receive health care without having to worry about having to pay for Hemsley's obscene salary.

We held a rally behind Hemsley's home with banners that held messages such as “Health Care not Wealth Care”, “Down With Insurance Companies” and “Health Care is a Human Right”. We sang songs, participated in chants and we heard a passionate call for real health care reform from Dr. Elizabeth Frost, a family practice physician who is tired of seeing the insurance industry deny her patients the care that they need and is taking a stand for universal single payer Medicare for all.

Hemsley may be uncomfortable with us gathering on the lake outside his home, but we promise him that we will stop making him uncomfortable the moment he stops profiting from the denial of the claims of his customers. The discomfort we cause Hemsley by holding banners outside his home is nothing compared to the discomfort felt by the millions of Americans who need health care but are denied access to it. We can not allow people like Hemsley to profit off denying people health care without feeling a public backlash for their actions, if we want health care reform we need to stand for real reform and we need to stand against United HealthCare.

It's simply immoral to have a health care system based on a for-profit system, with people's lives at the mercy of someone's bottom line. I don't know why there is even an argument about.

52. Hemsley was warned ahead of time and had all his curtains closed
One of my friends thought she saw the curtains move slightly a couple of times so it is very possible they were peeking out the window to watch us, but it is possible that it was a pet moving those curtains as well. I don't know whether or not they were present, but I do know that they are aware that we were present and I think that is really what matters.

It by "bipartisan," they mean the Democratic and Republican parties, then "bipartisam health care reform" is an oxymoron.

17. Excellent blog Bjorn you told it as it is.
Yes,Bjorn, you convey clearly why we are speaking out. As I said to the motorist who stopped to harangue us before we began our trek away from the road and across the lake, "We want more equity. We want people to be able to live." I did not get to elaborate to the motorist however, I might have continued by saying, "We want the excessive waste of administering the measured health care to be eliminated by having a system that is available for all. A system where health care is provided to anyone who is sick or injured. We want the patient and the doctor to decide the appropriate care without an insurance agent intervening to block treatment." Thank you to all who participated in this action for being socially concerned and exercising your free speech. I was happy to join in this effort myself as a supporter of free speech, self expression, and creative social activism.

18. Notice How The Cable News Networks - Didn't Pick Up This Story........
You would think that this would be a newsworthy story. But because it is directed at a corporate insurance bigwig - it looks like the Media is protecting him and not putting this out for all to see.

So this Hemsley guy will just have to endure some minor inconveniences until these people that are out there with signs realize that they aren't accomplishing anything by being out there - and he will have a very Merry Christmas and a Real Prosperous New Year.

Hemsley - the new Uncle Scrooge.

It would be an interesting re-make of the Christmas Carol story to have Hemsley as Uncle Scrooge and the plot revolve around Health Care.

20. Global1 actually got some main street coverage
Global1 while the cable stations might not have covered this event, even before the event the Associated Press covered this as a to be event. This coverage can be seen at: http://kstp.com/news/stories/S1323022.shtml?cat=206 During the first half of the event, WCCO was present and did some interviewing. This was prior to us going onto Lake Minnetonka. During the heart of the event, KSTP Channel 5, abc eyewitness news, was there also in front of Hemsley's mansion. The KSTP channel 5 story is at http://kstp.com/news/stories/S1323022.shtml?cat=1.

28. Sorry - I'm Sitting In Chicago And Didn't Hear A Word About This.......
it really only got local play - so we need to get these videos viral. Unfortunately - they don't mention how much money this guy is making and will continue to make off the America people. All he has to do is stay hidden in his fortress of a home that you demonstrated by - he doesn't care. He's going to have a real nice Christmas and New Year off the backs of us American taxpayers.

Why won't the cable news networks won't pick up a story like this? They are protecting Hemsley.

21. Steven Helmsley's mansions and stock options
The photos only show one of the mansions on the Helmsley property on Ferndale Rd. in Wayzata-Orono. There's at least another large mansion in the front, possibly a guest house? And it wouldn't be surprising to find Helmsley owns other homes in other locations. It should be recalled that Helmsley's predecessor, William McGuire, was caught backdating his stock options worth over $1 1/2 billion and Helmsley is said to have already "earned" 3/4 billion dollars in stock options.

27. Before going to United Health Group
Hemsley was CFO at Arthur Anderson. Apparently he's spent his whole career being a crook.

McGuire was still CEO when I was at UHG, I can't remember what Hemsley's title was, but it was rumored that, if you really wanted to make him angry, you should pronounce his name as "Helmsley". He didn't like having it sound like Leona's last name.

BTW, not only was McGuire a crook, he had major delusions of grandeur. I heard directly from an IT person who had had to go into the Throne Room (McGuire's office) to work on his computer that he had been told he was not to "address Dr. McGuire directly".

34. Hmm
Let me begin by saying I applaud your efforts protesting a pig fucker like Hemsley.

But I think this putrid waste of skin,Hemsley is so rich and rotten to his black cold core he does not have to care about anyone else and so I wonder did the slug parasite CEO even bother to get a servant to look out a window of his mansion for him because of the faint sounds he heard coming through his triple pained top of the line insulated glass windows?

The more these rich parasite bullies abuse us and ignore the suffering they inflict upon us,I wonder..what kinds of protests will be required to reach the deaf ears of the pampered, psychopathic, rich insulated Ceo pig squatting in obscene luxury in their private island, well protected ,gated, guarded, fortress mansions?

The only thing left that scares a PIG like Hemsley to pay attention to anyone else is the threat of LOSING. Losing his wealth, becoming poor, losing status, or his possessions and successors( mini Hemsley kids) and having to walk among the rabble he exploits and face their wrath personally.

Signs and stuff may have been effective years ago,but now they do not have the same effect,There is no media to shame them or turn the public away from buying the shit products congress is forcing us to buy from his criminal company,There is nothing to get him to bother to care or even listen anymore. Pigs like Hemsley are so insulated from the consequences of their abusive actions and greed they can twist laws at their will waving cash around to lawmakers without a conscience . The imbalance of power and wealth is too stark now for the methods of the "peaceful protest" to be heard by those who can afford to not care what anyone else thinks.

However I applaud your efforts again! You went out there. You tried. I would have been a bit more bold in getting this pig's attention. But that's just me.I wish you all could've got on MSNBC,and got more exposure in the media.

37. Hemsley lives here year round...
The media was notified of our action ahead of time however so we are virtually certain that Hemsley was notified as well. We are uncertain as to whether he was in the house peeking out at us or if he left for a few hours to avoid us completely, what we can be certain of however that he knows we were out there and he knows why we were out there, that is more important to us than whether or not he was home.

46. I don't get the hatred for Hemsley
The guy's compensation isn't that high, $3.1 million in 2008 as the CEO of a company that had $81 billion in revenues... For a company that size, comp is at the low end. As for his stock wealth, he's basically following the Bill Gates model. He's been with a company that has gone from split adjusted pennies in 1990 to $31 today. If you invested a sizable portion of your net worth in the company as he did when it went public in 1990, you'd be rich too. The only issue I'd have with him is the backdating of options.

$16 million in compensation for two year work and $744 million in stock options is a bit excessive? Imagine how much that stock is going to grow with the passage of this bill!! He's not just rich, he's obscenely rich off of denying people care.

because they either can't afford the deductibles or are denied coverage when they need it doesn't strike you as a tad criminal? Bill Gates hasn't done that.

73. Consider the public option.
Presently Medicare has a $400 billion + budget - and it's overseen by the Department of Health and Human Services. Its "CEO" i.e. Kathleen Sebelius receives a salary of under $200,000 a year.

That $3.1 billion he earns is more than the President of the USA, Chancellor of Germany, President of France and Prime Minister of the UK combined.

76. United Health Group also treats its employess like crap
UHG does periodic layoffs just because they can and because they follow the Jack Welch philosophy that their workforce is more productive when it lives in fear.

Hemsley was CFO at Arthur Anderson (think Enron) before he moved over to United Health Group so you can imagine what a swell guy he is.

53. As someone who has United Healthcare insurance, thank you
Edited on Sun Dec-20-09 01:14 PM by liberal_at_heart
We get insurance through my husband's employer and it is United Heatlthcare. I hate having United Healthcare but we have not choice. What's worse is even if there is a public option we won't be part of it because if you already have insurance you can't use the public option. That is why I am a single payer supporter. Thank you so much for representing those of us who hate having United Healthcare insurance. I just wish our congressmen would represent us instead of the insurance companies.

55. What a great place to gather with torches and pitchforks.
Symbolically speaking. If our country was smaller and everyone affected by this jerk was within a day's ride away, there would be mobs there. But this country is too big and too splintered. They know it so they fight to keep that advantage.

By the way, I help to maintain that mansion every month. Makes the injustice of the whole system that much more personal for me. Hemsley actually deserves none of what he has. He's a parasite.

that this pig continues on his merry fucking way, even while having the truth of his greedy actions shoved in his face.

60. You Rock !
Totally on Target!

We're not going to see an ounce of change until we take the message right to the houses where these sociopaths live offices where they work and force them to.

Kudos on the media coverage as well!
