Some things this party needs to do to win back the people it's lost this month:
Edited on Sat Dec-19-09 11:04 PM by Ken Burch
1) A ban on ALL corporate donations to Democratic candidates. The state of the Senate Mandatory Thiefcare bill proves that corporate money is blood money and will only elect people who hate this party and its objectives. CEO's NEVER had a place in this party.

2) Passage of Dennis Kucinich's bill to allow state single-payer plans.

3) A clear commitment to get out of Afghanistan and to create a new defense policy based strictly on defending OUR territory from external attack.

Add any suggestions you have below.

The party has, this week, forever LOST the right to simply DEMAND progressive support.

1. Ram a public option thru reconciliation.
Or better yet a Medicare By In for anyone.

9. That will never happen...
because this bill will face yet another cloture vote in the Senate, after conference. Nelson has already stated that he will not vote for cloture to end the expected filibuster by Republicans unless the bill is "substantially the same" and he specified no PO, no expansion of Medicare, and his abortion language. Only after the vote for cloture will it finally get an up or down 50-50 vote (tie goes to Biden, who would vote in favor).

Sorry to be a wet blanket, but that's reality.

For those of us that want to see the bill die right now, the best time is Christmas Eve, when the first cloture vote will happen before the vote to adopt and send it to conference.

And our best hope is... Roland Burris. Bernie Sanders would be a natural, but he has indicated time and time again that he intends to vote on procedural matters with the caucus leadership. Like Cloture. The other (dim) hope is Senator Boxer, after NOW gets through to her how important it is to preserve a woman's right to privacy. She might flip... but only if the crescendo of "kill this bill" become much much higher. Burris has nothing to lose, having already pledged to not stand for re-election to the Senate. There really isn't anything the Senate leadership can do to him (strip him of what?). However, it's a long shot.

29. Reconciliation isn't subject to filibuster. Are you refering to a PO amendment to the budget bill?
Is that amendment to the budget bill subject to filibuster? Is that what your saying?

Just asking for clarification.

6. There's that
Especially since the wives and daughters of insurance executives(like the wives and daughters of wealthy "pro-lifers")will always be able to get abortions even if the peasants can't get legal ones anymore.

8. No party ever has the right to demand any person or any group's support.
And Kucinich's bill will never pass in the house let alone the Senate.

11. Follow through on repealing DADT.
Include in the health insurance bill that all insurance companies must cover all spouses, not just the straight ones.
Follow the judge's orders to provide insurance coverage to all spouses of federal employees, not just the straight ones.
Repeal DOMA.

This, and my other post, reflect that many of the people who have turned against the party/administration have turned away because the party is actively discriminating against them. People often aren't all that hyped about supporting someone who is abusing them.

12. Stop trampling on women's rights...
I expect it from the repukes, but not from dems. I received a family postcard from Lincoln Davis in the mail today. I don't live in his district, I suppose he has my name and address either from the Federation of Democratic Women, or the TN Federation of Democratic Women. I will take it to the post office Mon. marked 'return to sender' with a notation about his yes vote on the Stupak amendment. Add to that more attention by actions to GLBT rights.

I suppose it is too much to ask to prosecute the torturing SOB's from the previous misadministration :puke: nor to cease escalating further military actions in other countries. Economic justice isn't going to happen either. Ah, and Don Seigelman will be hung out to dry while Stevens' case is looked into and prosecutorial 'problems' were found.

Those lobbyists who were supposed to be kicked to the curb, but seem to still be running the show, still need to be kicked to the curb.

Oh yeah, I still want my pony. :sarcasm:

Edited on Sat Dec-19-09 11:23 PM by Libertas1776
it lost this month is by building a time machine and doing the complete opposite of everything they did. Anything short of that, I will never trust them again.

22. They won't give us anything. We have to get our own Democratic candidates, vote
them into office and take power. Move the party far to the left and make the moderates ask US for recognition.
Anything less is useless.

We must start in 2010, and continue in 2012 and we must never give up.

34. No, I think you are right, but I would not hold my breath waiting for the
party big shots to even recognise that we exist. Reid mentioned that many people thought the bill did not go far enough in his press conference yesterday, and I believe that's all the acknowledgement we will get.

They will tell us we "don't understand" how hard they had to work to get the bill to where they could get 60 votes for it, and that they "carefully crafted" the bill to help people.

They will spend a lot of time congratulating each other and themselves, and tell progressives/liberals to stop interfering.

I don't think they understand the enormous anger and dissapointment many people feel about the garbage in this bill and all the "concessions" to republicans who won't spend a single vote on it anyway. The Senate and White House Democrats seem to value the GOP more than they value their own left wing. We HAVE TO change that.

that's okay. Thomas - Scalia - Roberts - Alito.

I'm really getting sick of it.
