I know that Dean said he would not vote for the senate bill if he was a senator, but he also said that he'd work to improve it.

I also noticed that David Axelrod and the White House have toned down that attacks on Dean, saying that he has deep respect for Dean and his passion on this issue. Axelrod was smacked by progressive bloggers Thursday night when they asked David if he would call Sen. Ben Nelson "insane" for again ruling out voting for the senate health insurance industry welfare bill.

4. Although this bill isn't what I would have wanted...

the fact that many of the Dems I respect are voting for this (Senate Dems like Boxer, Feingold, Franken, etc.) or are writing that this is better than nothing (Krugman) or are reconsidering their former positions on this bill (Dean) has me on board. I've read the provisions and it IS better than doing nothing. Sure, the insurance companies are going to make more money, but it's going to hurt them as they cannot continue some of their more heinous practices, and I love it! The insurance industry itself is not inherently 'evil'. Unregulated it can be, but if there are regulations protecting the consumer, they can be good. Not as good as a public option, but certainly better than the deal we have going now where people are dropped if they get sick or are discriminated against because of pre-existing conditions or the lack of accountability for large profits that they aren't using to benefit the consumer. That will all change with this bill.

7. The health insurance lobby helped write a large chunk of the Senate bill

There are lots of loopholes in that bill that they will exploit and people like me who have pre-existing conditions will still be gouged by them. It will be interesting to see how many people choose to pay the $750 fine for not purchasing health insurance. I can see the Tea Party mob growing because of this.

As for regulations, they are only as good as those enforcing them. The state of California has decided not to enforce a 1 million dollar fine on Blue Cross for illegal recissions, so customers are screwed and the law is not enforced.

11. We'll have to work on closing the loopholes in the future, and we will.

Remember, as the loopholes become publicized, there will be public outrage and demands to clost them. It will beour job to stoke that outrage and pressure for closing the loopholes.

Unfortunately, democracy is not a one-time event or even a once every two or four year event. It's a continuous event and we need to continue participating every day in some way.
