'Citadel Broadcasting Corp., the third-largest radio broadcaster in the U.S., filed for bankruptcy in New York on Sunday.

Citadel, which owns and operates 224 stations across the country, listed debt of more than $2.4 billion and assets of about $1.4 billion.

As of Sunday morning, only Citadel's voluntary petition had been filed with the bankruptcy court.

Citadel is expected to file a deal supported by lenders collectively owed $2 billion, known as a "prearranged" deal in bankruptcy parlance.

These lenders plan to swap ...'

4. Actually,
you're going to have to look back to the Big Dawg. Telecommunications Act. Yep, they hosed us on that one.

7. Yeah, okay.
Who signed the act into law? People who were paying attention at the time knew he would be fucking us over for years with that one signature.

11. I think a lot of us were distracted with the even more insipid "Communications Decency Act"...
Edited on Sun Dec-20-09 02:59 PM by cascadiance
... that was a part of that abortion of a bill. Patrick Leahy led the fight against that that had many of us netizens worried in the day. We probably didn't pay enough attention to the rest of the bill as well, which was also crap.

At least the Communications Decency Act portion got thrown out by the courts, which I think we were counting on, and perhaps the corporatists were counting on us being satisfied and distracted by that mess to allow them to stealthily pass the rest of that devious crap that they didn't want us paying attention to.

What's interesting to look at are the few senators that voted against the Telecomm Act...

- Russ Feingold
- Patrick Leahy
- Paul Simon
- Paul Wellstone

... and ...

John McCain!

I wonder why he didn't champion himself on that bill in this last election? Probably would lose more votes amongst his base than he would gain with any of us.

Those not voting on it:

Chris Dodd
Jay Rockefeller
Phil Gramm

12. You were paying attention.
I worked in a town at the time that had 9 independently owned stations, you know how many now? One. I lost two jobs as a result of that bill.

14. I have to admit a Libertarian then woke me up to the DINOism of Feinstein at that point...
He wasn't happy with her, and up to that point, I'd been voting for her as a "Democrat" without thinking too much about it.

But to hear her rail about how the Communications Decency Act was needed almost like a Republican, and to see her take similar "big cop government" stances on other things too, where she wanted separate rules for herself than everyone else (she wanted to carry a pistol but restrict everyone else from doing so), her true self started showing then, which lead me to vote for Medea Benjamin instead of her in 2000.

15. Other "liberal" Democrats voted FOR the Telecom Act too.
- Joe Biden
- Barbara Boxer
- Dianne Feinstein
- Edward M. Kennedy
- John Kerry
- Carol Moseley-Braun
- Harry Reid
- and a whole lot more

I think it was more based on intimidation than instinct. It was just two years after the Republicans took back Congress, and even deeply blue liberals like Kennedy were fearing a loss of their seats. That act combined with Reagan's FCC repealing the Fairness Doctrine explains the pollution of radio with crappy music and right-wing lies.

13. Ahh, Chickenhawk Hannity. How perfectly pathetic.
No wonder they are tanking. America has had enuf of the radical & arrogant right wing FAIL & spin republicon propaganda stooges.

Not many want to listen any more to their lavishly corporately overfinanced efforts to disdain honest Americans while bamboozling kool-aid guzzling couch potatoes into voting for the rich and against their own best interests.

16. If "America is tired of right-wing trash talk radio" why are those shows still top of the ratings?
I mean even with Citadel declaring bankruptcy, throughout the decade (and probably 1990s too) right-wing ideologues have dominated the talk radio circuit. Take Talkers magazine's figures. Look at all the conservatives on the top rankings. Could anyone clarify?
