Oscar winner Jennifer Jones dead at 90
Source: AP/Yahoo

LOS ANGELES – A publicist says Jennifer Jones, who was nominated for Academy Awards five times and won for her portrayal of a saintly nun in "The Song of Bernadette," has died at age 90.

Leslie Denk, spokeswoman for the Norton Simon Museum, says Jones died Thursday at her home in Malibu. Her only son, Robert Walker, was at her side.

Jones, the widow of museum founder Norton Simon, was deeply involved in overseeing the Simon during her later years.

She was one of Hollywood's biggest stars in the 1940s and '50s, appearing in such films as "Duel in the Sun," "Love is a Many-Splendored Thing" and "The Man in the Gray Flannel Suit."

2. "Beat the Devil" (1953)
If you want to see a highly entertaining movie, see this one!

Beat the Devil

A John Huston production with Truman Capote as co-writer.

Stars:
Humphrey Bogart
Jennifer Jones
Gina Lollobrigida
Robert Morley
Peter Lorre
Edward Underdown
...and Bernard Lee (007's "M")

Ms. Jones, from Tulsa, Oklahoma, effects a very-convincing British accent. A classic!

5. She was also the widow of David O.Selznick. She has only one son because
her daughter with David committed suicide in the 70's. The Selznicks were family friends. RIP Jennifer. She was a lovely lady.

18. I was friends with (Mary) Jennifer Selznick in High School.
We went to a small (then 130 students) boarding school together in the SF area 68-70. I was a year older. Her name was Mary but she went by Jennifer. Her Mom and Norton Simon visited the school on several occasions to great fanfare. Jennifer was a shy, sensitive, and often sad girl. Several years later I learned of her death from another former classmate. We use to hike on Mt. Diablo and Jennifer was the only person to ever read tarot cards for me on one of those hikes.

20. We returned from Europe with the Selznicks and Jennifer
and I remember "Little Jennifer" being do proud her mommy was an actress and won an Oscar! We were around the same age, I was a little younger, and I told her that was nothing. "My mommy was a lawyer, and was liscensed to practice before the Supreme court". Big Jennifer and David got a big kick out of our little argument.I like to think that they are all reunited now. RIP.

35. Jennifer Jones' daughter
Edited on Fri Dec-18-09 10:05 PM by indiansummer2009
I roomed with Jennifer Jones' daughter (she did go by Jennifer) at Windsor when she was 15 or 16. She was beautiful, like her mother, with long hair, and quiet. I remember her trying to meditate "doing yoga" stretched out on her bed. I didn't know about her losing her father, and no doubt this played a large part in her troubles. Her mother had a heart of gold, may they rest in peace.

My family was involved with the Selznicks in a number of ways. I went to Sunshine Preschool with Mary Jennifer. I remember her as a very intelligent and sweet girl. Over the years I thought about getting in touch with her but I waited until it was too late. Although my grandmother knew Jennifer Jones well, I never had the nerve to ask about the exact circumstances of Mary Jennifer's death. Very sad story.

10. I remember as a kid having to
come up with a saint for a confirmation name. Just that week, The Song of Bernadette, starring Jones aired one afternoon. I fell in love with her and would have gone with the name Jennifer but thought it too blasphemous choosing the actress instead of the real saint. So Bernadette it was.
She did good. Beautiful woman, great movies.
Thanks for posting.

21. Thanks, Lydia.
I don't think I've ever heard of her, but the face looks familiar. I'm surprised she wasn't more of a household name with 5 Oscar nominations, but I guess fame really is fleeting. I will definitely have to put some of her movies in my Netflix queue.

22. Apparently she guarded her privacy and rarely gave interviews
That's probably why she's not as much of a household name as some of her contemporaries.

She was also featured in one of the all-time worst movies, "Duel in the Sun."

"Trash, trash, trash, trash, trash."

She had also been married to doomed actor Robert Walker ("Strangers on a Train") and had two children with him.

hit, only this time starring his girlfriend or wife. The closing scene is arguably the funniest love scene in the history of the movies. Of course the humor was unintentional.

"Duel in the Sun" was the first DVD I ever bought.

28. The ending of "Duel in the Sun"
The dialogue was dubbed in Italian or something, but you don't need the dialogue to know how unintentionally hilarious it is:

Crazy scene. But you got to admit the kitchen scene was pretty daggone racy for it's time.

Thanks so much for the clip!

31. Yep. I love this film.
Director King Vidor was on a "winning" streak in the late 1940s: He had "Duel in the Sun," "The Fountainhead," and last and not least "Beyond the Forest." Few major directors can come up with a string of legendary turkeys in such a short period of time.

because she had been divorced. Mom thinks, but can't remember for sure, that the "Legion of Decency" may have banned the movie for that reason.

32. No interviews
Throughout her life Ms. Jones appeared shy and aloof in public, and she rarely gave interviews. She explained why in one of the few she did give, in 1957.

“Most interviewers probe and pry into your personal life, and I just don’t like it,” she said. “I respect everyone’s right to privacy, and I feel mine should be respected, too.”
