I think it's a hell of a stretch, and I'm kind of disappointed to see MSNBC trying to make it into something. He didn't mention Byrd's name. All he said was he hoped someone didn't make it to the vote--a 1AM vote in the snow. To infer he was wishing death on Byrd or whoever is just... sleazy.

Don't get me wrong; Coburn is a major prick. There are a lot of good reasons to want to stomp the bastard. But this is just kinda stupid IMHO.

It was a specific attack on Byrd... and I'm kinda in agreement that 92 is a bit old to be in the Senate, but this was uncalled for.

6. Well considering they are using Byrd's name when buttwipe couldn't
I thought you'd take it as a clue that buttwipe(R) was asking his people to pray that Byrd died. There are a number of other "blogs" that specifically attack Byrd but you will have to look them up for yourself. Google is your friend.

If some Democrat did what buttwipe did the republicans would be out in full force. It would be the top story on every fox show.

7. That's because they're full of shit and willing to say anything, no matter how false.
I don't want to be like them. And are you really saying that some blogger wishing Byrd dead is evidence? I could find you a couple of blog posts wishing any member of congress dead, surely. It has no bearing at all on what Coburn said.

2. So youthinks Durbin is being sleazy?
Edited on Mon Dec-21-09 09:21 PM by Bluebear
When it came his turn to speak, Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., lashed out at Coburn for "invoking God's name in prayer for political purposes...to wish misfortune on one of our colleagues." Saying that he was troubled by what Coburn had said, Durbin also called on him to return to the floor to "explain exactly what he meant," an invitation Coburn did not accept.

3. Maybe he really believes what he's saying, but I just don't think he's right.
After all, why on earth would Coburn wish for the death of Byrd publicly? It makes no sense to me.

10. Coburn is a very passionate hateful man. It makes sense to me that he would.
My interpretation was that he was wishing for illness, accident, death, or anything that would prevent a vote. With Byrd's and Lautenberg's health at the front of Senators' minds it is easy to believe that Coburn prayed for the worst.

5. I agree
I can hardly yell at Coburn for wishing someone not be able to make a vote when just last night we were playing a game of "which DLC scumbag would you like dead" around my living room. My vote was for Mr Rahm in the billiard room with a meteor but it wasn't in the cards I guess......

11. No he said to pray that something would happen to a Democratic
Senator to keep him/her from voting. He is as bad as some of the rw tv personalities that call for violence against the president. He does not specify what he wanted to happen but what happens when some crazy thinks God told him to get rid of one of the Senators?

12. Coburn is an idiot... perhaps the biggest in the Senate
I remember his comments about SE Oklahoma middle-school bathrooms being filled with budding lesbians during the campaign.

He is a TOTAL ASS.

Lesbians of America, pack your bags! There’s a new lesbian capital of the world: Oklahoma!

It may at first be hard to believe that this modest midwestern state is a breeding ground as a lesbian Sodom and Gomorrah, but we have it from a good source that the state is in fact cultivating lesbian debauchery.

None other than former ultra-conservative Republican Congressman and the current Republican Senate candidate Tom Coburn says so.

In a tape recently released by Brad Carson, Coburn's Democratic opponent for the Senate race there, Coburn is heard warning the good clean citizens of Oklahoma of the great lesbian threat to their state.

On the tape, Coburn tells how a campaign worker form Coalgate, Okla., told him that lesbianism is “so rampant in some of the schools in southeast Oklahoma that they’ll only let one girl go to the bathroom.”... http://www.alternet.org/rights/20162/

13. My guess is that they are using lesbian to mean feminist. In other words
young women who think for themselves. Also if the kids are dressing like they do here in MN I suspect that many older than 50 think it is some dangerous outbreak of some really radical left idea when in fact many of these young people are merely following what is style.
