Nelson says that he will vote against the final bill if his compromise on abortion is stripped out. But what power does he actually have? If he votes against the final bill and it dies, doesn't his $100-million in Medicaid exemptions die with it? Same with Landrieu. If the bill dies, what happens to the $300-million she was promised?
It would seem to me that progressives could have their way in conference. Put in single payer. Put in the expansion of Medicare. Put in importing drugs. Will those Ds whose votes were purchased walk away from the pork they exacted and stand on principle? I doubt it. How would that look back home after all the publicity they received for bringing home the pork, only to lose their pork by voting against the final bill?
They can threaten all they want, but unless I'm mistaken, their pound of flesh doesn't get paid if the legislation is killed.
