we've been trying to leave the state for nearly one year and still cannot find a job anywhere else. Dh is doing contract work at 70% of his previous pay with no benefits, but at least it's keeping food on the table and gas in the car. We had to take out the last of our retirement, however. We're trying to refi the house but have no idea if that will ever go through.

Because there are a lot of problems in Florida that it's fairly difficult for the stimulus to cure, or even impact.

Too many people built too many condos and houses for which there are no buyers. Florida has what 25% of all the subprime foreclosed properties?

The state is still suffering many effects of the Jeb Bush years.

And there are all kinds of insurance problems caused by 4 major hurricanes in one year.

But, by all means take the very simple way to look at these problems--it's Obama's fault!

I can't speak for "most of you" but I still believe in the First Amendment and when I see my ass and my relatives/friends/neighbors asses get sold down the river again and again by a "Democratic" administration and Congress/Senate who is SUPPOSED to represent me but is really supporting the fascist corporatocracy who feed off We The People, I'm going to speak up. Sorry if that upsets you.

The stimulus SHOULD have gone to the American people -- to the tune of $22,000 each (the last per person figure I heard). The Banksters SHOULD have been allowed to go bankrupt, just as We The People are forced to go bankrupt when we make stupid investments and lose everything we have because of it. Funny how "free market capitalism" only applies to We The People. Then when We The People ask for help, we're "welfare queens" but when the banksters ask for help it's called a "bailout" and it takes them about 45 seconds to pass the necessary legislation to give them OUR money.

If you want to continue to hold on to some partisan delusion, that is your privilege but realize there is a humongous vacuum forming as we speak and the outcome is uncertain at best.

comparison to Florida and you're right It's a similar pattern regarding the population growth too.
We're growing but only at a rate of 1% per year (that's nothing for California) due to unemployment and home foreclosures.

I still can't believe double unemployment for the forseeable future. It seemed like it was 3.9% a couple of years ago.

the oil companies postpone projects and "optimize" their workforces.

I don't believe we are in a recession, I think we've experienced an adjustment. Nobody is telling us that because, in an economy based 70% on consumption, they have to keep "consumer confidence" as high as possible just to keep the economy from crashing further.

We're hearing that the tourist industry, a big summer boost the the Alaska economy, is also cutting back. I believe it was down about 15% in 2009.

36. I would not doubt it one bit - Had to move from there in 2008 because of it!

We had very few offers when we lived there and I have a Master Degree and my husband is retired Military. We both could not find anything that paid over $9.00 an hour. It is unbelievably hard right now to find anything there and it was always hard from 1989 on. They laugh in your face and tell you the pay is the sunshine and they aren't joking! It is still rough because the taxes are still too high and the insurance is atrocious! They are still using the 3 hurricanes from 2004 to up the price of the house insurance. It is not a good place to raise a family and for those that are there who are chronically ill it is also very hard to get any help.
