7 Arrested In Savage Attack On N.J. 8th Grader
"Police said as many as 11 students beat up an eighth-grader honor student in an apparent case of revenge. The victim, who is Hispanic, suffered severe injuries, and it was possible he may lose sight in one eye. It is not believed, however, that he was the victim of a hate crime. Police said the student who threw the first punch was also Hispanic, and the other students all come from diverse backgrounds"

"Investigators said the teenagers jumped Muneton on Friday as he walked home from school to get back at him for an earlier incident during which the eighth-grader accidentally hit a girl with a basketball.

The superintendent said the girl, who has also been charged, led the boys to Muneton, saying "He's the one.

"Three of the students charged remain at the juvenile detention center in Paramus, while the rest have been released to their parents -- two of them required to wear ankle bracelets."

1. So a girl got a bunch of boys to beat up another boy.
Certainly not the first time that has happened.

7. Really? I don't recall any kids beating another kid nearly to death when I was growing up
Lots of kids are bullies, but this transcends bullying.

8. Same mindset, different degree.
We live in more brutal times, but the kids who did this are just the gang of bullies that sent people home with a black eye and a bloody nose 20 years ago.

17. I must've just lived in a more placid town, or maybe it was the times
I was a kid in the late 80s/early 90s, and there was little real violence among kids, at least in my area. I can't even begin to fathom how some stupid playground shit like this could escalate to attempted murder.

9. You're right....they are sicker shits nowadays
I'm not old ( only 34 ) but there was shit that went on in my Catholic grade school that would make your fucking jaw drop.....I have stories...if you want to hear them, and I was around when we got smacked with yardsticks for reciting the Apostles Creed incorrectly...or other infractions...

oh yeah....these fuckers wouldn't have survived then

20. Hey. Same age. Same Catholic background. Can relate, lol.

It's definitley worse nowadays. We had the fist fights, huge hockey scraps and the like, but this new breed seem more vicious.

And yes, some scary shit went on in the catholic schools, lol...

21. Hair-pulling and fist-fights were always "called out" where I grew up
In my neighborhood, if someone wanted to fight you they "called you out"...and you can bet that person had an audience. If you refused, you were a wimp or other names referring to certain parts of the female anatomy I don't think I should mention here...anyway, I think you get the point.

Nowadays, kids threaten each other by taking their names off their MySpace friends list

11. hi dear mercutioATC. sadly, in some areas of the country this is more routine than in others, but
it can happen everywhere.

when I was growing up, fighting was rare, even in high school. large group attacks like this were unheard of. (20 years ago)

12. I was in 8th grade 30 years ago...and kids getting beaten up was a normal thing.
Occasionally by a group of kids (and I lived in a rural area, not the inner city).

My point is that I don't find it shocking in the least.

That was the only assertion intended.

6. Is it bad that I want to slap the taste out of that little girls mouth?
I feel bad, but she deserves it.

I don't know what my parents would have done to me had I been involved in an altercation like that, but it certainly would have been FAR, FAR, FAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAR worse than anything that seems to be happening to these kids. Even as an adult, I shudder to think what they might have done! I'd probably still be grounded till I was 50, and wouldn't have the ability to sit down till 30. :P

But in all seriousness, that child is a little bitch. I want to meet her parents so I can give them a piece of my mind. Which would go along the lines of, "You need to control your child, or I'll do it for you."

...and if it was my child? She'd be making restitutions to that boy for the rest of her life. I'd personally see to it. She'd never regret starting something so bad... ever. Ever. EVER.

13. The more I think about it, the more I want to slap both of her parents, too.
I'm sorry. This just doesn't happen unless the parents fail. I've been hit with a ball accidentally before... fuck, I've had to have my middle finger in a splint from an injury from a ball. Never once would have doing what she did - rounding up a bunch of hooligans to take revenge - never once would it have crossed my mind. Even anger wouldn't have entered my mind, because I understand what is and is not an accident.

But the key here is this: Even if the THOUGHT of taking revenge for an accident like this entered my mind, the very thought of what my parents would do to me as a result would have kept me from carrying it out.

The only thing I can figure is that this little bitch is so spoiled, and believes herself so privileged (and I know kids like this), that she felt somehow ENTITLED to take revenge.

Seriously, if she had decent parents this shit wouldn't have happened. I know neither my sister nor myself would have done it growing up, nor any of my cousins. Sure, I knew some bad kids and stuff. I've seen fights, and even been in fights. But every time I was in a fight at school it was always self-defense; not once did I start it. And of course, my parents always told me that if someone ever hit me that I should beat the shit out of them. :P

14. That makes perfect sense to me...when someone bigger picked on me
my bigger brother would go after the fucker....one example

There was this kid on my bus who CONSTANTLY tormented me...the big thing then was grabbing someones ear and yanking as hard as you could...well, I turned around ( on the bus ) and socked the fucker

Next day, I get off the bus and his older brother comes up to me and sucker-punched me in the stomach....I wobbled home

The next day, MY brother drags the kid who punched me into our house ( to talk to my Mom, no less ) apparently he was stalking him...waiting till he got off the bus and dragged him off his bicycle...into our house...totally against his will

we don't fuck around....the kid ( and his brothers ) didn't fuck with us ever again. Sometimes revenge is really sweet

18. LOL.
I don't have any fight stories nearly that dramatic. However, that's completely different than what this little girl did. By the reporting what happened with the ball was a complete accident. She then (apparently having developed a vendetta) rounded up as many hooligans as she could find to beat the kid down.

The only time I saw a fight even similar to this was at one of my school buses stops. One of the kids on the bus was tormenting another one of the kids, who was pretty slow mentally. After the kids got off at that stop, an older kid (from High School most likely) was waiting there for the tormentor. The kids at the bus stop pushed the tormentor to the ground, the high school kid kicked him a few times as he was curled into a ball... shouted at him, told him leave the other kid alone, and they left him alone. He was able to get up after that and walk home. I don't even think he got bruises... well aside from his ego.

The two major physical fights I was in... the first one, a kid in my class shoved me down three steps. I went down the stairs on my knees... I remember looking down at one of my pencils, seeing it snapped in half on the floor (not even sure how that happened). Then turning around, the rest of the class was laughing at me, and I saw the kid who pushed me laughing at me. I reached up, grabbed him by the collar of his shirt, and YANKED his ass down the stairs. I ended up ripping his shirt, and threatening to throw him down the next flight of stairs before the teacher yelled at us. We both had to go to the office. :P

The second major fight I was in, some kid was throwing tiny little rocks at me. I'd turn around and tell him to stop. He'd then claim that it wasn't him, but I knew it was... he thought it was a joke. He wasn't doing it to hurt me, just kinda horsing around. When the class got back inside the school, he was behind me at the water fountain. I went to drink some water, and he shoved me face down, causing me to bump my head. I don't even remember hitting him. I just saw red. The next thing I knew, he was staggering back about five feet, holding his stomach, and would have fallen on his ass if not for the wall. I probably would have lunged at him, had the teacher not shouted, "HEY!" Snapping me out of it. We both had to go to the principles office, and the boy broke down into tears, lol. We kinda became friends after that, sorta. We didn't get into trouble, just got a warning.

I was in a few other altercations, but those are the two major ones... I've seen other more serious fights. But nothing like this story. One boy required stitches once, but we were High Schoolers then, and I think the fight had to do with drugs. I've never seen or heard of fights when I went to school where anyone was seriously hurt, mostly bruised egos.

25. The answer: Shitty parents.
It might have been where I grew up, but I know most of the kids - even the bad ones - wouldn't really consider doing something like this... their parents would have eaten them alive. Fear of the police would be the least of their worries.

Nowadays parents are MIA, don't give a shit, don't get involved, and let their kids run wild. They don't set good examples, and don't work toward teaching their children how to be responsible adults by first being responsible children.

That's really what it comes down to: Shitty parents.
