The United States Democratic Party. Usually characterized by beliefs such as:
- personal privacy rights, including legalized abortion and gay marriage - protection of civil liberties - protection of the enviornment - multilateral foreign policy - extensive government services, such as health care, education, and welfare - tax system that causes the rich to pay more taxes to pay for above government services
Unfortunately, our party does not support Privacy any more. Obama has gone to court using Bush's exact arguments to retain Bush's spy powers for himself. He is also retaining the patriot act in all its horrible glory. The amendments that protect us from unreasonable search and seizure is still more or less null and void. So that Personal Privacy bullet point should come off of there.
Our party now believes that legalized abortion is a legitimate bargaining chip that can be sacrificed for political purposes. Our own party has helped restrict abortion, and it crafting the health care bill that will make abortion almost entirely unobtainable for the vast majority of women in the U.S. So that bullet point should be removed.
Gay marriage? Our party doesn't support gay marriage. Our party isn't even willing to talk about gay marriage. Our president dodges the issue, hems and haws about marriage being between a man and a women, and then talks about maybe civil unions. Gay Marriage definitely shouldn't be up on that list.
Civil Liberties? Not for LGBT people, or women, or the poor, or Muslims, or Arab Americans. Our party also supports tough law and order stances, even though we already incarcerate more people per capita than any other nation on earth. So our party supports criminalizing people for iffy or minimal reasons, especially if you an immigrant, or a minority or are poor. So Civil Liberties definitely should be removed from that list too.
Protection of the environment? Our party used to want to protect the environment, but that was before our party embraced free trade. Now we write free trade agreements that say that business deals over-ride any local environmental laws, and partner nations can sue for damages if any environmental law causes them a loss of profit. Now our party only supports voluntary environmental policies. Our party doesn't protect the environment any more. Now our party supports destroying it less quickly than the republicans. So that bullet point should be removed too.
Multilateral Foreign Policy: I think our party still supports this. Let's keep this one, unless someone can correct me. I know we've always expected to be the boss over our allies, but we still wanted others to be there, kow-tow and help us. Multilateralism doesn't have to mean that we work together as equals. it just means that we aren't out there alone.
Extensive government services such as health care, education, and welfare. Our party is in the process of outsourcing all health care to corporations, forcing us to give up to 22% of our pay as a privatized income tax to insurance companies. Obama is trying to decimate public schools and teachers unions because he supports privatized charter schools. Clinton drove tens of thousands off the rolls of public assistance with "welfare reform." No, I don't think it is true any more that our party believes in extensive government services. Our party is constantly trying to cut and gut those services. Just not as quickly or severely as republicans. This bullet point should be removed too.
Tax system that causes the rich to pay more? More than whom? No, our party has been raising taxes on the middle class too. At best our party wants to make the rich pay a slightly higher share of taxes, but still much lower rate than what middle class people pay. Our party supports the idea of tax loopholes to ensure that rich people pay an overall low rate of taxes. And our party supports the idea of a low tax rate on unearned income. The mistaken idea that our party supports taxing the rich more is based on only looking at earned income, but the rich don't get their income from earning it, and our politicians know this. So this bullet point should be removed too.
So overall, that means only one of these bullet points seems to still be accurate. :(
