and all are chasing those dollars all the way to the bottom

any boomer can attest to the fact that crowded classrooms are not necessarily the problem. The problem is that teachers have always been underpaid, for what they are asked to do.

The generation of "single schoolmarm/old maids" that taught a lot of boomers (we WERE "their kids"), has passed on, and the ones who stepped into their shoes were of a generation that had a LOT of options, so many people who gravitated into teaching, may not have planned on doing that one thing forever..and they had families of their own,,and y'know..lives..

This all seemed to coincide with all the "new-age" changes in teaching , budget cuts, and a whole lot of "new rules" that pretty much screwed up a whole lot of kids, and frustrated the hell out of many teachers.

And , we have had a whole lot of interference from the Bible-crew, always messing with books & curriculums.. is it any wonder that teachers are dispirited?

Also, as aid to poor families seems to always be shrinking, more and more teachers are feeling the pain, and many use their own money to help their students.

The ones at the top of the food chain...in education.. always seem to land on their feet, though :grr:

Homeschooling is tough though. And the truth of the matter is that Americans are going to be working so very hard to survive HCR and Cash 4 Clunkers that homeschooling won't be an option for most. So their kids will go to school to learn how to take orders, stand in line, and move from one place to another as a group.
There isn't much education happening in schools. There is memorization of the questions on the tests, and there is moving from class to class.

My teacher/union rep friend swore to me Obama stood in front of them and spoke out against vouchers and merit pay. It didn't make any sense to me at the time because press accounts were different. He seemed to think Obama was just placating the righties but he really had their back.

Look for some hurt feelings on education, because Obama has been about as vocal a proponent of charter schools as a Democrat can be. On jobs, look for the two things he's been mentioning: a tax credit for new hires and direct hiring for infrastructure work. On deficit reduction, look for a tax hike probably balanced by another payroll levy reduction.

Watch the corporations with the most to gain in these areas. They will be front a center both at the white house and in congress. See what policies they are advocating for and you can accurately predict to the sentence what the reform legislation will be.

These four years are basically a money grab for politicians. Obama made alternative energy a central focus of his campaign, but now that he is in office there seems to be very little push to develop those alternative energy sources. I wish I could be patient but climate change is an issue that needs to be dealt with immediately, the future of our planet is at stake here and we need to cut back on our carbon emissions now.
