Because being locked up in a tiny cell for the great bulk of your day isn't punishment enough. To get the real prison experience, you need to have the crap beaten out of you. I guess many don't mind having a more fucked up justice system than many 3rd world countries.

I don't quite get why liberals who espouse peace and oppose torture would get such a kick out of physical violence.

Bernie Madoff is a criminal who deserves to be in prison. But no one deserves to be physically violated (not him, not Berlusconi).
Shame on those who think broken ribs are the justice we extract for financial fraud. It's not the liberal way.

I doubt he celebrates Christmas. I don't think prison beatings or rapes are anything to celebrate or be thankful for. Having your wealth and freedom removed is pretty devastating in itself. 150 years is over a lifetime and Bernie will die in prison, hopefully from natural causes.
