claims that they are compensating all passengers on the aircraft that crashed at the Norman Manley Airport in Kingston with US$5,000.
Looks like someone wants to get ahead of the coming law suits.
Only the really stupid will take this settlement.

There was a commuter train accident in Boston a few years back and there were more injury claimants than passengers on board at the time.

I have no doubt that someone will try. I'm betting that many of the passengers already have American lawyers. They won't settle for $5,000.
On top of that people can't get their luggage because the aircraft is sitting on the ground. They received their hand luggage today.

6. There's a limit on liability for personal injuries on international flights.

There's a treaty, the Warsaw Convention, which either has been or is about be be superseded by the Montreal Convention, but both place caps on damages. If Montreal is in effect yet, the amount is a good deal more (I think it was about $25K under Warsaw). The airline already knows what its maximum exposure is, in any event.
