How much longer before we start to see massive strikes, and civil disobedience?
After the in your face corporatism of the neoCONs to kick off the new century, and now the pandering to the people, yet steady-as-she-goes elite policies of the dems, I would think that would be the next emergent behavior from this culture of ubiquitous corruption and militarism.

How do we bring real change or will this be the new normal... for the new century?

Happy Holidays!

1. The New Century has been here going on 10 years, and Bush destroyed any normal
on the day that the Supreme court appointed him to the job of President.

We finally have a new President now, and he will undo much of what Bush did...
and attempt to take us back to the standard normal and away from where we have been,
the BushParanormal.

5. 10% through the new century, and 25% through the first term of the hope & change presidency
i really don't see much change in policy, just rhetoric... maybe there needs to be more pressure applied?

14. considering they are taxing union benefits, it wouldn't surprise me
after all, unions just chip away at corporate profits. And Walmart is *helping* with the China debt.

3. I'd like to see
an updated vrsion of King's proposed "tent city" in Washington, DC. I suggested that DUers consider that, at the beginning of the summer. I think that about two or three people responded. I suspect that by next summer, more people will see the benefits of such an undertaking.

12. when i reflect back on history, and significant change, it never occurred unless
there was significant pressure put to bear on the elite by folks getting out in the streets, and i do not have any reason to believe it would be any different in our time.

Yeah, I got a feeling that this summer's temperatures won't be the only thing rising.

:hi: H20 Man, a very happy holidays to you and yours :toast:

7. Give it one more year like 2009 and you'll see some civilian activity
Right now we're still hoping that the crash really is a jobless recovery. One more year without some real indication of things improving will do it. There's no reason to go on massive strikes when we still have hope.

9. 8 or 9 years
minimum, if ever.

A people unwilling to shut the country down over torture are rather unlikely to get particularly worked up over relatively nuanced technical healthcare issues. If they were ever going to do this over healthcare, it would have happened years ago, during the Bush admin, when truly nothing was being done.

The actions taken to relieve the problem, even if not as effective as it could be, will be no worse, and might be seen as better than doing nothing to the public's eye. This issue will be long dead by the 2010 election, and perhaps as soon as next month. Once the political drama is done, it will drop like a stone from media coverage, and that i am afraid will be the end of that. The poor will be a bit better off and the rest of us will notice little objectionable change.

10. That shouldve been happening from Raygun onwards, but it never did...
Instead, as Raygun plotted and planned and made the poor even poorer, they joined churches and applauded Raygun. I don't understand the American mentality. Or maybe the Repukes just have that successful right wing propaganda that convinces Americans and once convinced even Germans.

11. I'm waiting to see what actally gets signed into law.
If is all mandates and no public option, I expect you will see people across the country refusing to comply. If this leads to wage garnishments, confiscations, or arrests, there will be demonstrations and strikes.

I can't wait. Maybe this is just what we need.

17. And that is possible,
because we are fresh out of money in this country. Yet, not only do the wars continue, but Xe/Blackwater is STILL in Pakistan to further destabilize that country, the war in Iraq still continues too, plus Afghanistan.

15. It'll be awhile

When more and more people are jobless, homeless, no income nor savings, no unemployment compensation, no credit cards, no food stamps, food pantries are empty, and people are hungry, that's when we'll see some unrest.

16. If this winter sees more people DYING because they can't heat their homes
And the funds to help have run out - you'll see people move. While Geitner and the rest of the Corporocrats are having their fluffy Christmas - think about all the newly-minted homeless living in tents around the country NOW. Those people are stunned by the shock of losing their homes.

Those numbers are still increasing.

18. Bread and Circuses. As long as the people are fed and entertained they remain vegetables.
The American population is effectively brain dead. There will be no public reaction until well beyond the point when any public reaction can possibly do any good. The average American will begin to worry about:

1) Corporatism when they are first being sold in the slave auction, and by then it will be too late.
2) Global warming when their swimming pools begin to boil, and by then it will be too late.
3) Economic collapse when they find themselves homeless, and by then it will be too late.
4) The health care crisis when they find themselves seriously ill with no insurance, and by then it will be too late.

22. The massive strikes and civil disobedience will start
Right around the time the refugee and death camps start overflowing with the corpses of those who dared dreamed the American dream.

Which will be right around the time; the power grid and gas pumps are shut down.

Which will be right around the time; when the grocery trucks stop running from coast to coast.

Which will be right around the time; gangs, death squads and mercenaries start fighting for the control of our dying neighborhoods.

Which will be right around the time; when the intellectual elite predator class has no further use for the over paid American debt slave.

Which will be right around the time; when it’s too fucking late for most Americans to get a clue.

23. When the first people get fined for not buying corporate crap they cannot afford
Workers have been losing ground in the economy for over 40 years. Now, they have to pay for something that does not guarantee them real health care? More and more are not able to keep their homes!

When the fines start, look for some real ruckus. People with nothing to lose can be a force to be reckoned with.

26. Not anytime soon... and not likely in our lifetimes

This subject has come up just about every year for the past 100...

It's not going to happen. The economy has stabilized, and is starting to turn upward. People aren't going to be in the streets anytime soon.

and have often been very effective... it's always a battle, with lots of sacrifice, but we progressives have had a very successful track record considering where we started and just the last 100 years.

just saw a progressive thought leader mention this fact in this short clip...
