A senior U.S. counterterror official says a passenger aboard a Delta Air Lines flight in Detroit was planning to blow up the plane but the explosive device failed, the Associated Press reported today.

A White House official said the incident was an attempted act of terrorism.

AP said it learned that early indications were the passenger said he was acting on behalf of Al Qaeda.

The counterterror official said the passenger was being questioned this evening. It was not immediately clear why the passenger wanted to attack the flight that was arriving from Amsterdam.

The passenger created a disturbance by lighting what was reported to be firecrackers -- or perhaps a "powdery substance" -- onboard the flight, injuring himself and several other passengers, according to Delta Airlines. ..........(more)

1. And the 'bomb' was supposedly firecrackers.
I imagine enough firecrackers would do some damage, and I also wonder how he got past security. But that word 'terra' just does something. Stand by for more stringent rules from DHS.

6. It wasn't firecrackers.
I don't suppose you had any loved ones on the plane, since you think it's just a big fucking joke.

7. Excuse me? I don't think it's a big fucking joke. I linked to the article
that said they were firecrackers, which is what I read first on DU.

I'm very sorry if you have reading comprehension problems.

Here is a blurb from one of the original articles, which makes it sound like an obnoxious prank.

Firecrackers on board...Storm moves east...Unsuccessful search

WASHINGTON (AP) — A Delta Airlines official says a passenger set off firecrackers aboard a plane at Detroit Metropolitan Airport causing a commotion and some minor injuries. A spokeswoman says 278 passengers were aboard the Airbus 330 from Amsterdam. She says the passenger was immediately subdued. A University of Michigan Medical Center spokeswoman says one person from the flight was taken there.

13. that was uncalled for.
no one here suggested it was a joke. What's your problem, Santa didn't bring you what you wanted for Christmas? Isn't there a game on you should be watching?

why the flight wasn't turned around and allowed to land in Detroit instead is a question I have. Does it say in the article when it was discovered that he had explosives and when he tried to set them off?

ok read the article, he didn't try to set them off till final approach to Detroit. Still why wasn't he searched in Nigeria then Amsterdam. Northwest couldn't answer.

4. First heard it was firecrackers
The first report I heard about this was that a passenger set off some firecrackers when the plane landed in Detroit.

Now it has turned into an attempted terrorist bombing while the plane was in flight.
