It took a while,a lot of work (70-85 hours a week for almost 5 years) and a whole lotta being the ultimate cheapskate (I still drive the same 25 Yo car) But we were able to put enough cash aside to buy a small cabin on 1/2 an acre in Southeast Ks.
We still live like true rural America from 40-50 years ago (Land line phone,RR P.O.Box,Wood stove for heat) but we are happy and comfortable.
It is too easy to take what one has for granted,as a child I grew up in a wealthy family,in one of the better parts of Long Island N.Y. so I thought that everyone lived like I did,Nice house, good schools, nice neighborhood,New car ect. Quite a shock to find out that people still do not have indoor plumbing, even today!
And yes I can't count the number of times that my Well-Off R.W.Conservative relatives freak out when I hand my last coupla bucks to someone who is in more need of them than I am...They swear that one day one of these "Homeless Bum/Lazy Drunken Bastages" are gonna kill me for the three bucks I may have.
Personally,I think that I am happier for the experience, for I can truly appericate what I have Rather than believing that the next "Hot Electronic I-Gizmo"is gonna make my life happier and solve all my problems. Maybe thats why my GF and I have stayed together for the 27 years while EVERYONE else in the family has been married multiple times,or has real life issiues that seem to be brought on by a bad case of personal discontentment.
Maybe imitating/adoring P.Allen Smith,Bob Vila and Martha Stewart ain't all its cracked up to be,lol.
