It looks like there will be no public option in the final version of health care reform, some House democrats said on Sunday.
They say they would be willing to give up the public option when the House and Senate iron out their differences in conference committee.
The House bill has it while the Senate’s does not.
The third ranking democrat in the house says he would support a bill without it.
Representative Jim Clyburn of South Carolina says it’s not as important as other changes to the system.
“Because why do we want a public option? We want a public option to do basically three things: create more choice for insurers; create more competition for insurance companies; and to contain costs. So if we can come up with a process by which these three things can be done, then I’m all for it. Whether or not we label it a public option or not is of no consequence,“ said House democratic whip James Clyburn (D-SC).

Once it left the Senate with no P.O. I assumed the House would cave. It might take a few days and some more effort, but I was sure that we would not have a Public Option.

Though personally, I think health insurance should be divorced from your job and be a direct benefit everyone should get in the same way directly, whether they work or not.

...that, knowing there weren't 60 votes for a bill with a public option in the Senate, the House would insist on one anyway?

(And, for those of you who would call for reconciliation, realize that a bill passed through reconciliation might have a public option, but without those regulatory sections of the bill that can't be passed through reconciliation, what you'd almost certainly wind up with would be a public option with premiums that cost more than private insurance.)

11. That was a forgone conclusion, once the Senate passed

what it passed. This HCR thing is what we could get with the current makeup of Congress. No more; no less. Threatening Democratic members with being primaried won't change that. Indeed, we could lose members and lose any chance to add the public option later.

Instead, working very hard in races that could be gained for Democratic candidates is what we should be doing. In the Senate, we need just 6 more Democrats to make the obstructionists from both parties irrelevant.

We got exactly what we could get in this bill. We will get more, but only if we replace a few more Republicans with Democrats. If we fail at that, we will get bupkis.

I'm serious. How, without destroying the method we use to elect our legislators, do you propose that we will get the single-payer tax-supported health care we all want?

It's swell to say you want something. I want it too. But, you don't propose any way of attaining that goal. If you have a better suggestion than the one I proposed, I'd be happy to hear it. I'm stumped beyond trying to elect an even larger supermajority than we now have.

So...let's hear your plan.
