Mexico City opens arms to same-sex 'marriage'
Charlie Butts - OneNewsNow - 12/28/2009 6:00:00 AM

Many Mexico City residents are upset after the local assembly voted approval of homosexual "marriage." The bill passed by a margin of 39-to-20, making Mexico City Latin America's first to legalize same-sex marriage.

"These activist legislators, as we have seen happen so often here in the United States, will just brazenly thumb their nose at the people that they purportedly represent in order to kowtow to the radical agenda of an extreme minority within their nation," comments Matt Barber of Liberty Counsel.

According to the attorney, many residents are raising a ruckus over the move to change the definition of marriage in the city's civil code.

"They have been told that despite what thousands of years of history and every major world religion and plain old common sense tells us, that marriage is what marriage is -- the uniting of one man and one woman," Barber argues.

Mexico is largely conservative on moral issues, so the town assembly's action goes against the grain. If the bill stands, homosexuals will have the same rights as heterosexuals, including adoption privileges.

After the bill passed, Mexico City lawmaker and leftist Victor Romo commented on the "unjust laws" that banned marriage between different races before stating, "Today all barriers have disappeared," he stated. Mayor Marcelo Ebrard is expected to sign into law the measure that changes current wording in the statute to define marriage as "the free uniting of two people."

1. I hope the legalized gay marriage law stands.
I would love to see some group of lawmakers who legalize gay marriage actually fight the hate mongers back and defeat them. I am at a loss for how to do that. I would love to see if someone can manage to score a win for gay rights.

4. Dear Fundies:
I was going to write a very facetious Bible lesson, but decided against it. After all, it's hard to top "underwear bomb doesn't pass the smell test." I still don't believe I wrote that. Well, actually I do.

But flip to Leviticus 18--the list of prohibited sex. In this long, long list of Nookie Thou Shalt Not Have is "your father's wife." No, guys, they're not planning for your dad to trade in your mom on a newer model--this is in reference to the very common Biblical practice of plural marriage. Remember, King Solomon, the wisest man of them all, was married to 700 women and maintained 300 concubines. If he had sex with three different women every day, it would have taken almost a full year to cycle around to the first one. Exodus 21:10 even gives you directions on keeping multiple women: if you take another wife to yourself, you shall not diminish her food, clothing or marital rights.

So what I'm saying is this: when you discuss "Biblical marriage" are you referring to Adam and Eve's marriage--note that according to Scripture Adam and Eve were the only two people out there, so even if Adam would have wanted two wives he couldn't because there weren't two women!--or one of the multitudes of plural marriages in the Bible?

6. Bible proof
I've found that you can't use the bible against bible thumpers because it is their book, not yours. They will be the ones to interpret what it says. They will be the ones to pick and choose its texts. You are not a believer like them, so you have no understanding of the Holy Book.

7. You're kidding, right?
Cartoonist, welcome to DU and understand that BIBLE THUMPERS can't use the Bible against other Bible Thumpers. That thing is written in such a way that no two people will ever agree on what it says.

Let's take John 14:2--In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would not have told you.

There's three ways to read this:

Way 1: the "mansions" refers to different denominations of the Christian faith. One mansion is for the Catholics, one for the Episcopalians, one for the Baptists...basically, anyone who believes on the Lord shall have a place in heaven. (As opposed to Baptist polity which insists the Catholics are going straight to hell.)

Way 2: there's lots of room for believers; anyone who believes on the Lord shall find his place in Heaven. (IIRC there are faiths who tell you only x number of people can get into Heaven; for some strange reason x just happens to be the number of people who are members of that sect. I remember a church with 177,000 known members throughout its history who preached that Heaven held exactly 177,000 people. Hmm...)

Way 3: Jesus is gonna build me a great big house!

Unfortunately, the third way seems to be prevalent among the fundies--it's one of the tenets of Chick Theology, as expounded in his riotous little comic books.
