Fox To Obama: Quit It With Your Big Words Like 'Allegedly'
Edited on Tue Dec-29-09 12:22 PM by kpete
Fox News today found a new reason to criticize President Obama's speech on the attempted bombing of Flight 253: His use of the word "allegedly" to describe the suspected terrorist's actions was "Harvard Law School talking, that's not commander-in-chief talking."

..............

Camerota agreed: "You rarely see him getting fired up, but in this instance the use of the term 'allegedly,' to your point, that's Harvard Law School talking, that's not commander-in-chief talking. So he needs to you know change his, some would say, rhetoric."

11. See, if Fox were a real news organization composed of journalists...
They'd know that it is standard journalistic practice to refer to any suspect accused but not yet convicted of a crime as the "alleged" rapist, murderer, terrorist, etc.

However, since Fox News is nothing more than the propaganda arm of the Republican party composed not of journalists but highly paid liars and rabble-rousers, it's not surprising that they would be unaware of this fact.

14. Not that I agree...
but I understand what they are trying to say. To use "allegedly" implies that there is a chance he is innocent of the acts he was arrested for. You are silly to think he isn't guilty, and the president isn't the one charging him, so he can convict him in the court of public opinion.

21. Have you forgotten "innocent until proven guilty"?
That's how our justice system is "supposed" to work. No one is saying that he isn't the one who attempted a terrorist attack. It still has to be proven in a court of law.

Hell, why don't we just go around and convict anybody in the court of public opinion and skip the trials?

32. well
I never said he was convicted in a court of law, but to use "allegedly" is weak. There were eye witnesses and proof. He is guilty. The courts will make it official, but at the same time, there is nothing wrong with the president using more definite terms.

33. Doesn't matter. He is presumed innocent until proven guilty--and
Obama would be violating the US Constitution--the Supreme Law of the US--to refer to him otherwise.

You could murder me on camera at half-time at the Super Bowl and until you were judged guilty by a jury of your peers, you would be innocent. And I'd rise from my grave to take on anyone who called you guilty before the jury made their decision.

IT. ISN'T.A. RHETORICAL. THING. It's the LAW. Geez.

38. Incorrect
"Obama would be violating the US Constitution--the Supreme Law of the US--to refer to him otherwise (as a bomber rather than alleged bomber)."

No, Obama would not be violating the Constitution by neglecting to use the disclaimer of "alleged" or "allegedly". He might be violating the spirit of the idea behind the Constitution, but there is no law that says you can't espouse your opinion as to someone's guilt or innocence.

Question: because you adhere so tightly to the concept of "innocent until proven guilty", do you agree with the practice of holding some people in jail before they go to trial? If so, how can you square this practice with your beliefs?

Edited on Tue Dec-29-09 12:49 PM by izzybeans
"Some would say" they are like trained monkeys or Pavlov's dogs.

I would of course never say such a thing, but some would.

Sometimes they throw it in there in nonsensical places. "So he needs to you know change his, some would say, rhetoric." This doesn't even make sense. Do some call it rhetoric or do some say he should change is his rhetoric? If some call it rhetoric, what about others? "Oh well, I got 20 points for throwing it in, though, didn't I?"
