today's New York Daily News blog reports:

Assemblyman Dov Hikind appeared on Fox 5 this morning to defend his plan to reintroduce a controversial bill that would, in his words, let law enforcement officials use ethnicity "along with many other factors" in trying to ferret out potential terrorists.

Hikind floated the measure in 2005 with little success. But in the wake of the recent terror scare, he has resurrected the legislation and apparently thinks its time has come.

"You know, my position is not that we profile one group," insisted Hikind, a conservative Democrat from Brooklyn. "Hey, we can go after the Norwegians or Scandinavians. We can go after all kinds of people. No one is saying the authorities should not do that."

"We can go after 80-year-old men and women getting on a plane. But the reality is that you look at the profile of what terrorists have looked like, where they come from and so on and it just makes sense to use that along with other things."

Life must be much simpler and less troubling when you rely only on simplistic stereotypes and knee-jerk reactions, rather than having to worry about complexities like remembering that the first person we convicted of terrorism after 9/11 was a blond, blue-eyed white guy...

And this bit of bigotry does not surprise me at all.

whether it be the patriot act or the enabling act. But the need is always couched in racist or ethnic terms to get the people to go along.
