Today, I Am An Iranian in Heart & Support the Green Revolution!
This American, ashamed of what our country did to Iran in 1953, looks from afar here in California to the brave men and women of Iran struggling against oppression there, risking their lives and I salute you from the deepest part of my soul at your courage.

Iran is one of the world's great nations with a history of great culture, contributions to the world in the sciences, arts and humanities. Indeed, their history is older by thousands of years than our own.

I watch as an outsider at those in Iran, young and old, who speak out for their freedom and their civil rights and I am inspired by the people there.

May your Green Revolution flower! May your wishes and dream be triumphant! And may you know that there are a lot of Americans who admire you greatly.

Today I am an Iranian.

1. Kick.
And, sadly, you are getting unrecs. Apparently, there are Democrats on this board who reject democratic revolutions.

3. I applaud the Iranians, and hope they succeed without too much
heartache and bloodshed. But that's what a revolution consists of, isn't it.

6. K & R
I hope the youth of Iran are successful in overthrowing the religious tyrants currently in power.

People in Iran risk their safety and potentially their lives by speaking out against their rulers. They are very courageous. I wish them success.

7. Nice sentiments
But you shouldn't kid yourself. Iranians don't trust the U.S.

The U.S. was instrumental in putting the shah into power. Reagan helped Saddam Hussein in the first Gulf War (to Iranians, the Iraq-Iran war is known as the first gulf war). The U.S. shot down an Iranian airliner. The U.S. has threatened Iran, invaded Iraq (a bordering country), and invaded Afghanistan (another bordering country). You get the idea.

12. No kidding at all.
If you read my OP again, you'd see the first sentence was this one: "This American, ashamed of what our country did to Iran in 1953." Anyone who does not know this history should read "All the Shah's Men" for starters. Your historical accounting is all true. And not only did the Reagan/Bush Administration support Hussein against Iran, but Donald Rumsfeld approved the selling of chemical weapons to Hussein (the same ones he used against the Kurds).

Still, this person (me) admires the courage of the Iranian people in their on-going struggle.

daleo, my hopes have nothing whatsoever to do with expecting Iranians to "trust the U.S.", but have everything to do with admiration in their struggle against religious oppression, which is not just limited to Iran, but exists here in the U.S. and all over the globe.
