Sooner or later, we've got to stop pointing fingers and start solving problems.

6. If they hadn't been held illegally and tortured and held for years
perhaps they wouldn't hate the US as much as they do.

Folks here were screaming for justice, humane treatment and due process. They were screaming that the Geneva Conventions should be adhered to and they were screaming that we should not go to war.

Seems like too much bother for most people, sadly, even here at DU.

You need to do some actual studying of the Constitution and the Geneva conventions, instead of filling your head with the spewings of Rush, Bill-o, and Beck.

24. FYI, Bush tried the shoe bomber in a US court, got a conviction,
and crowed about it.

This is not different.

And, people who are not citizens of this country still get tried in the same manner as people who ARE US citizens.

Go back to your cave.

26. For Crimes Committed on US Soil, The Constitution Applies...
Just as if you blew up a building in Germany, you'd be tried under German laws...those who attacked the US and or US property/citizens can be tried in American courts and if that's the case, Constitutional protections of habeus corpus apply.

It's not the person, it's the crime that dictates rights and the venue and that determines whose laws govern trials. Sorry, these aren't "war criminals"...unless you can show me the declaration of war.

13. Bull cocky
If they were caught trying to kill soldiers they would have been tried for such.

They were just caught up in the mass hysteria of the Bush "we hate terrorists" - you know, they were sold to the US by their enemies and the like.

The detainees that were caught doing something wrong, trying to kill soldiers and the like, are still being held.

You truly need to step away from the rightwing lie traps and try to educate yourself on the truth of things.

BTW, nice to know you don't deny the torture and abuse, there is a shade of honesty in your writings.

Tell me, how would you react if you were captured, flown to some unknown region, abused, beaten, kept in solitary confinement, not allowed to see your family or get word to your family for 4 to 6 years? How would you behave if you were tortured and abused and forgotten? Would you swear revenge?

You know you would, you want revenge for 9/11, don't you?

28. First I hear of that
and you are mixing apples and oranges.

We are signatories to the Geneva Conventions... are we not?

We are supposed to follow the rules of these conventions, are we not?

And what does today's events have to do with... neighbors selling neighbors for bucko bucks who did NUTHING? And those people were RADICALIZED by the treatment they received in VIOLATION of the same conventions we signed and expect OTHERS to follow.

Edited on Wed Dec-30-09 08:52 PM by nadinbrzezinski
I am

And we did VIOLATE them from top to bottom. Ever heard torture is against the Geneva Convention?

If we treated these people the way we treated oh Japanese POWs, you'd have no peep from me. But we didn't.

Wake up and smell the roses, because people who were NOT radicalized before, have been radicalized... torture tends to do that.

I guess you are not familiar with any of this, or could care less. After all they are brown people...

Oh and the CIA has a name for this. It is called BLOWBACK

35. In fact, many of them were *not* caught ...
...trying to kill Americans. Many of them were rounded up in general sweeps, having been turned in by local bounty hunters who were only too eager to trade in their fellow countrymen in return for $$$.

Try reading up on some of these cases. Not all of them are hardened terrorists, not by any means. But some are, to be sure. And they should not be released. However, we do have high-security prisons, and we do have a legal system that is capable of handling them. We need to retain trust in our own democratic institutions.

33. There is a difference...
...between demanding that they all just "be released" vs. that they all have access to due process.

Also, somehow I'm having trouble believing that Dick Cheney took any DU opinions under advisement before he decided to release the two who appear to be behind the attempted bombing on 12/25.

But nice attempt to deflect blame from the one WHO ACTUALLY RELEASED THEM, to people who are concerned about whether we follow our own damned laws or not.

36. Yes, we were screaming about releasing the innocent
prisoners who were kidnapped and tortured for no more a reason then their neighbor or business rival turning them in for money. There were a lot of innocents collected and tortured. But apparently that doesn't matter to you. Many of them sat in prison for 5 years without 1 charge, the * administration had how many prisoners were facing a military tribunal?

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/5134328.stm
<snip>
The Bush administration had plans to try about 60 to 80 of the 245 foreign inmates still being held at Guantanamo. The camp once had some 750 prisoners.
<snip>

Do you remember how many were prosecuted? You don't? Why is that? From the article it looks like 2. We didn't hear about successful prosecutions because the whole process was broken...they started with 750 people that were tortured or murdered and they only had plans to prosecute 60-80 out of 245, you are smart enough to realize that the numbers don't add up.
