But I always do the 90's instead of the '90s bit. Stand corrected. And weird is a word I usually have to write and look at before I'm sure I'm right.

103. Okay, my spellchecker doesn't catch that one. lol
I have always been a terrible speller and even worse so after one of my illnesses. I have a spellchecker on my computer that usually catches the words I mess up on but quick typing often makes us, well me at least, use similar words by mistake and a spellchecker does not catch these because they are not misspelled. I could care less any more, there are so many worse things I could be doing. ;)

I laugh every time I scroll down through it.

I like things like this. Make education fun and funny and more people will learn.

I'm so glad you and the others who have commented liked it.

203. More people get "it's" wrong than right now.
I constantly see "it's" as a possessive, On DU and everywhere else. I learned this rule in 5th grade and never get it wrong. Is it possible that there are no Americans left who can understand and follow a simple rule of grammar? How stupid are we, anyway?

BTW, I also hate it when people say "he gave a gift to my wife and I" or the like. Again, I learned that it is "to my wife and me" in elementary school. Now apparently nobody knows this any more. What is wrong with us? Pretty soon we will be back to communicating with grunts and hand gestures.

57. Just to be a little sadistic on New Year's Eve eve...
I will throw this one in.

Affect can also be a noun. Affect pronounced with an emphasis on the first syllable, is a term used to discuss the outward expression of a person's mood. A person describes their mood, but what you are seeing is their Affect.

For example, "Joe says he is sad, but he keeps laughing. His affect does not match his mood."

but the rule-of-thumb that "affect" is usually a verb is very helpful to people who struggle with the difference.

And of course, "effect" can also be a verb!

You "effect" changes (bring about results). His behaviour was "affected" (actually an adjective, meaning pretentious. And the Brit spelling is deliberate, I lived in London for 5 years. Trying to break the bad habit though--it's somewhat "affected" like Madonna's accent)

because my son dubbed me the "Spelling Nazi" even before the Soup Nazi on Seinfeld existed. I was always correcting him, and I still do, because it's my duty to help my (now college-graduate) son put his best foot forward in the world.

But, the internet? I had to chill when I started communicating online, otherwise I would be deemed to be an insufferable know-it-all (which is easy enough to happen, anyway, when you're spouting your opinion right and left).

And what a lot of people don't understand that this kind of learning by memorizations does not work for a lot of dyselixic...
I can remember having to chang words I am using because i just can't figure out how to spell the word I wanted to use....just a complete blank. And most of the time they are common words not the complex ones or hard to spell like scissors.or vacuum.

But I can see how some people would find it hard to understand that...I don't understand it myself.

21. And that's one that Spell-check actually catches.
I'll admit, I have found myself accidentally misspelling words and not noticing because I have come to depend too much on Spell-check. If the word is listed in the Spell-check library, then you don't get that alarming red squiggly line and so it goes unnoticed. But if it's not in the Spell-check list... that's just sad!

It's eats, shoots, and leaves. But you knew that.

On second thought, it must be another joke I never heard about. (About which I never heard?) A dangling preposition sometimes makes for a less-awkward sentence.

do not register. So, you HAVE to use multiple ellipseseses to spread it out.

59. Pretty much.
"lay" is generally something you do to something else (it requires a direct object - such as "Sally" in my MILs scenario: Joe laid Sally last night, or the egg the hen is laying)
"lie" is generally something you do your self (doesn't require a direct object)

You lie down on a bed, but you lay a book on the table.

"Loan" and "lend" drive me crazy, too. "Loan" is a noun, "lend" is a verb. "Can you loan me a buck?" guarantees that I'll smack you in the mouth. It's, "Can you lend me a buck?"

I live in a world with idiots who actually ask "Can you borrow me a buck?" Whenever I hear it, it grates on my one remaining 'Idiot' nerve. So, I respond "LEND!!! Can you LEND me a dollar?" And The Idiot will reply "Yeah, that's what I asked. Can you borrow me a dollar?" These Idiot's have no friggen clue!

I'm far from perfect, and I try to avoid correcting others, but that particular error, I have problems coping with for some peculiar reason.

3. Watch Out For Whooery, Whichery and Thatery

Ken Macrorie, my mentor, taught me this tip in graduate school
. Watch how the excessive use of who, which and that can be a source of wordiness in your sentences. Here are a few examples from Ken’s book Writing To Be Read:

a. Mr. Rendew, Alice’s father, (was a man who) actually liked to have his lawnmower go wrong so he could tinker with its motor.

b. George ( is the type of man who) always shines his shoes before going downtaown.

c. (The people that) I would like to tell you about (are) Father and Mother.

"Facist" isn't a real word, but if it were, it would rhyme with "racist" and probably denote a prejudice against ugly people, or perhaps discrimination against fully-veiled Muslim women and people in Halloween masks.

If you want to refer to the political line of thought involving militarism, dictatorship, etc., as in Mussolini, then it's "fascist."

It is the perfect illustration of the unsuitability of large, slow aquatic mammals as school transport. Everyone knows that small, ferocious woodland mammals provide much better rides. Also, while you're in school and your Wolverine is chained to the bike rack, it can munch on the bike tires of the kids you don't like. A Manatee would just lay there and try to sweat.

128. You know,
I almost think that "their" for "his or her" should become accepted usage. "His or her" is so clunky. "Their" has a much better flow and is less disruptive to the sentence.

I know it's wrong, but it is one error I sometimes make consciously when referring to someone of unknown gender, even though I know that it is not correct.

107. "Accept" versus "Except"
This may help somebody:
We ACCEPT a prize, EXCEPT when there are strings attached.
I really think this could have been avoided through more precise pronunciation by those who are lucky enough to have encountered extraordinary teachers, librarians, and clergymen. It really has little to do with money; my family frequently didn't get enough to eat, but we had a few of these wonderful people in our neighborhood. They showed us thast the spelling system, although admittedly complicated by the checkered history of England and the U.S., does make more sense than a first glance would suggest, if you know the derivations and relationships of the words. If you listen to the movies made in the 1930's, the diction was much more clear. Since then, carelessness has become fashionable. Maybe the motive behind this drive was to be more egalitarian, but it does have its drawbacks. When everybody says "gonna" instead of "going to" (including college presidents), and "UHSEPT" instead of either "ACcept" or "EXcept," it is no wonder that so many people have trouble keeping these things straight.

It's different than the various definitions of the word "fuck," because it's an entirely different word from the original "ask." I suppose it is comparable to different uses for the letters h, o, m, and e, i.e. "He went home" and "'ts up, home," but that brings up questions about whose sub-group sets usage (Why not we "grammar/spelling police" rather than other sub-groups?).

I would also add about a million other words or phrases: everything from "free rein" (not "free reign") to "vocal cords" (not "vocal chords").

But, to add: There are some tricky ones that just go against logic that you just have to memorize and know, because there's no logic that will tell you they are right. Such as:

restaurateur: That's right, no "n." I remember it by thinking "There's a rat in the restaurant."

tendinitis: That's right, it really is "tendon" but "tendinitis." Don't ask me why. It just is.

If I were to make a list, lose and loose would be #1. My students, though, do a better job with all those on the poster than most DUers, because I don't let them get away with it.

199. Mormon.
Member of a religious sect founded by Joseph Smith in the 19th century.

Always spelled with two m's, including one in the middle, except when they pull crap like pouring millions of dollars into Prop H8.

215. I realize it's not actually a word, but this one drives me crazy.
"Oppps." As in: "Oppps, I dropped it."

How the hell can you get that one wrong? Even if one is not a good speller, there are still a few rules of pronunciation that hold up, no matter what.

And now...off to the court to shoot a few hoppps.

221. Hardly. The only reason I posted this in the first place...
was because the image of riding a manatee to school and goat riding kittens was too cool to pass up.

Not to mention cows eating rancid casserole.

224. This is brilliant. How about agreement between subjects and predicates?-

If only they (he, she or they?) would something similarly brilliant on agreement between subjects and predicates. You know, those predicates that agree with the nearest noun instead of with the subject?

I hear it all the time. It seems I never hear verbs agree the way they should anymore. Of course, they do it differently in UK.

Sorry, I cannot think of a funny example right now.

227. And learn how to use "lie" and "lay"...

...Lay takes an object. If Jesus was "laying" in a manger, what was he laying? EGGS???

235. The problem there is that the spelling of the present tense, lie, is counter-intuitive and
the PAST tense of the irregular verb "lie" IS "lay".

"As shepherds lie asleep on the hill, Joseph stands watch, Mary sleeps and Jesus lies in a manger" and "As shepherds lay asleep on the hill, Joseph stood watch, Mary slept and Jesus lay in a manger" are both correct, depending upon whether you are talking about events in the present or in the past.

However, this darned irregular verb makes "They saw Jesus laying in a manger" into "They saw Jesus lying in a manger."

One wonders, if we are going to prioritize usage for "their" instead of "his" or "her" or "his or her," at what point does usage become the standard for lay vs lie or for any of the transgressions listed above?

When/Where do you draw the lines? That's why, even though I don't always get it right and end up inadvertently making usage the standard, I much prefer accuracy, especially in logic. A singular person should not suddenly be referred to as a plural, especially in contexts that include ESL users. One good way to avoid the problems associated with that particular usage is to just avoid indefinite references.
