Health Officials Warn of Lead in Mexican, Chinese Candy

SACRAMENTO (AP) -- The California Department of Public Health is warning consumers not to eat Chen PiMei Candy imported from China and Ticorindo Candy from Mexico after tests found unacceptable levels of lead.

State public health director Mark Horton said both candies were found to contain as much as .14 parts per million of lead.

California considers candies with lead levels in excess of .10 parts per million to be contaminated.

Ticorindo candy is sold at Dollar Max stores in Southern California and is packaged in clear plastic with the word "Ticorindo" in bright red and yellow letters. Chen PiMei Candy is sold in clear plastic bags with a large green rectangle containing Chinese characters and the candy's name.

The CDPH said it is working with the candies' distributors to remove them from store shelves.

2. We've had warning posters up in our clinics for years.
Nothing new there.

The posters had pictures of the various brands of Mexican candy that were found to contain lead.

6. And that's why I read the food label and I put it back if it has China or Mexico on it.
If a company won't tell me where it's from, I won't buy it. And I'm not talking the "Distributed by Campbell's, New Jersey" part of it, either.
