Weird synchronicity... Jennifer Lopez and Total Body Scanning
Edited on Fri Jan-01-10 01:49 PM by Kurt_and_Hunter
The news today is all about two things: Total Body Scanning technology and Jennifer Lopez's body-stocking worn performing at the New Years Eve show.

The oddity is that both stories are about people's emotional reactions to glimpsing the shape of the body without actually seeing the body.

Jennifer Lopez was wearing a LOT of clothing. It was very cold and rainy. That "body stocking" was more like a white scuba suit with a body stocking on over it.

She looked great. She's 41, has two kids and was sexier than most media divas half her age. And she was not showing anything, or even close to showing anything except her shape... her dimensions, devoid of surface detail.

Her outfit was being panned by everyone on TV as the vilest, stupidest wardrobe choice in human history. God knows why. Cher probably goes to the grocery store in worse get-ups.

Then back to the total body scanning controversy... which results in images that look almost exactly like someone in a close fitting body stocking.

My take on the two controversies is roughly the same: Not a big deal.

1. There is one difference. Choice.
Lopez chose to reveal her body shape to strangers (the people watching her perform). Someone traveling from point A to point B is not traveling for the purpose of revealing their body shape to strangers, but they're not being given a choice.

Is it a big deal in the greater scheme of things? No. I'm not thrilled with the idea of some TSA twit counting my fat rolls, but since I won't hear or see it happen I'll survive the experience.

But to compare it to what a performer does by choice (and a hefty paycheck) is a bit of a stretch.

2. Those of us that are less than svelte have more to worry about, too
I was reading an article yesterday re: fat people having more places to "conceal" items on our person. Considering the already-virulent strain of prejudice that ensures fat people aren't treated like human beings, I predict VERY invasive searches of one's person in the name of "safety" and "security".

I was a bit shocked at Ms. Lopez' attire last night, but she looked amazing. Good for her. And yes, she chose to reveal her body to people. Those who are flying are attempting to use public transportation, and don't ask to have strangers touch them inappropriately, or to have the images of a full-body scan end up on the Web. It's going to happen. Those who claim they won't are kidding themselves.

3. It's that..exactly..

Lopez makes her living from "being sexy", so it's money in the bank for her to constantly show everyone that she's not gotten "old and fat".. that she's better than ever.. Odd clothing choices/camera angles may distort her figure, but a formfitting bodysuit makes it impossible to avoid the real outline of her body.. she took control..

Having your personal belongings rifled through, by strangers..in front of strangers..and then knowing that your body itself is being "evaluated" by more strangers...and all because you are willing to pay a LOT of money for a plane ticket to see Grandma..or to attend a funeral.. or to go on a vacation..

they are different things..

My son will have some very uncomfortable moments if this goes through.. he has had a urostomy since he was 8 years old, and through careful management of his condition, he only "tells" a very few select confidantes. Not everyone needs to know..

This will probably cause him great anxiety to have to "show" screeners that the "plastic bag" is nothing he's that eager to "share with strangers"..and since he often travels with people he supervises, they may wonder why "the boss" got a "special screening"..

13. As much as it's a choice to get out of the house in the morning.
I suppose the logic of the OP would go as follows. Since JLo aren't afraid to get out on the stage in a body suit, none of us should be afraid to get out on the street naked. Or something like that.

14. Not really.
Many people don't like to fly and make other travel arrangements.

in a reasonable amount of time, I can't have any objections to what is being done for me to be able to board the plane?
And because JLo can get on a stage in a body suit?
Makes total sense.
:sarcasm:

23. Nothing to do with J-Lo.
But it is your choice as to what mode of transportation that you take.

7. Re: J-Lo
I was enjoying the thought of all the women sitting at home making rude remarks about J-Lo's outfit while their husbands were leaning so far forward they were almost falling out of their seats. I know that's what would have happened at my parents' house if my dad (R.I.P) was still alive. My mom hated it when a shapely woman came on because his eyes would be absolutely glued to the screen.

I personally would hate being subjected to a body scanner and would go to great lengths to avoid it as an invasion of privacy, but I suppose the real victim would be the person who had to look at my middle-age spread on the machine. Not a pretty sight.

8. LOL My husband was watching when she came on, and he started laughing like hell
and calling me in to see her. He thought she looked like a fool in that suit. I thought it was kind of weird too. But it had nothing to do with her weight or anything. That crazy suit was just funny to us.

9. Well - glad you mentioned Cher
JLo is the new Cher. I agree that if she's got it, as long as she is not indecent, what's wrong. I suppose the thing is, most people, the women especially, are upset cause at being of a younger age they don't look half that good.

it was very flattering. But I also don't think it was scandalous. You go, J Lo, girl!

21. I think Jennifer Lopez has a great body but I did not like the body stocking
It was just not attractive - too much of a throwback to the 80's (the Cher reference is appropriate). I hated 80's fashion. I saw a clip of her performance of the same song on "So You Think You Can Dance" and she looked much better there. She is aging very well. She doesn't really looking any different than she did 8 or 9 years ago, at the height of her fame.
