And you thought your family was dysfunctional
Italian opts for jail over New Year with relatives

ROME - A Sicilian man stole sweets and a packet of chewing gum so he could get arrested and spend New Year's Eve in a jail cell rather than be with his wife and relatives, Italian media reported on Friday.

The 35-year old Sicilian first showed up at a police station on Thursday asking to be arrested because he preferred spending the night in prison rather than with his family, but was rebuffed because he had not committed a crime, the Agi news agency said.

The man immediately went to a tobacco shop next door, where he threatened the owner with a box cutter as he grabbed a few sweets and a packet of gum. He then waited until police arrived to arrest him for robbery, the news agency said.

2. my mom is 1/2 Sicilian
My mom is 1/2 Sicilian, and after the past two Christmases (each involving a screamfest courtesy of mom), this sounds like an entirely reasonable course of action to me.

:-(

5. You don't get to choose your family. Only your friends.
It could be worse and it could be better.

6. On Thanksgiving I locked my nephew's gun in my safe
Edited on Sat Jan-02-10 08:41 PM by tularetom
Last year he got shitfaced and started arguing and threatening people and I'll be damned if I'm gonna let him act like that if he's armed.

He got the gun back a week later when he came around and asked nice.

If he wants to shoot somebody he ain't doing it in our house.

BTW, I took his keys too so his daughter had to drive him home. After he once again, over imbibed.

7. I think my son would have gladly
spent a couple of days in jail over the insanity that he had to endure when he did holidays with his now ex wife's family. The former MIL hallucinated flying cats and people running across the freeway. The former FIL with more money than God refused to buy any of his grandkids presents. Lovely family. So glad we don't have to deal with them anymore.
