Comedian Carroll dead at age 98

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y., Jan. 3 (UPI) -- Comedian Jean Carroll, whose wit dazzled audiences in the 1940s and '50s, died in White Plains, N.Y., at the age of 98, her daughter Helen Tunick said.

The New York Times said Sunday that in addition to her numerous stand-up comedy appearances, Carroll earned laughs on her former sitcom "The Jean Carroll Show" and as a repeat guest on "The Ed Sullivan Show."

Carroll's brand of comedy revolved around taking parts of everyday life such as family and shopping and turning them into comedic bits.

In addition, Carroll earned a reputation for wearing glamorous items on stage such as an evening dress paired with diamonds and mink.

In 1960, Carroll released the album "Girl in a Hot Steam Bath" in the wake of her time as a scriptwriter for "Our Gal Sunday," a radio serial for CBS.
