Former CIA agent "another big rethink on Afghanistan" in 1 year
Michael Scheuer, former head of the CIA Bin Laden Tracking Unit, on current American efforts in Afghanistan in light of the recent suicide bombing...

"The whole plan to train a national Afghan army that can exert control over the whole country is something that's pretty foreign to Afghan culture. It's very much a nation of not only regions, but provinces and even valleys. Usually, the building of strong central institutions in Afghanistan ends up causing war rather than stopping war, so the plan to train this army probably looks good on paper, but historically and culturally it's a very long shot, indeed.

Increasingly, we're viewed as occupiers. 30,000 new troops are not enough to win or to prevail, but it's enough to make us look, not only in Afghanistan but across the Muslim world, as an even greater occupying power. I'm afraid that in a year from now, we're going to be talking about another big rethink about what we're doing in Afghanistan."

1. The thing about this is that I think we have a CiC willing to rethink.
It gives me hope for a path out of this quagmire sooner rather than later.

3. Hope
Yeah. Methinks they told the CIC that he'd do this expansion like it or not.
So, he gives them what they want, and it IS what most Americas want. Safe political move. But in the days ahead, the public is gonna change and the war ain't, so there will be a better political move to come. I hope.

4. Karzai has been warned that he either gets results or his gig as top dog in Afghanistan is up.
Our generals have also been warned that they have to show results or changes will be made.

During this time period, we will have cleaned up some other problems in the area that don't directly relate to the situation in Afghanistan. That's my feeling.
