Steven Romero Due In Court Monday On Dog's Death

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. -- A Fruita, Colo., man was due in federal court Monday afternoon following his arrest last week in connection with the dragging death of a dog at the Colorado National Monument.

Steven Clay Romero, 37, is being held without bond on suspicion of aggravated cruelty to animals, a felony, and a hearing Monday was to discuss his detention.

At a Dec. 31 hearing, Romero expressed displeasure at being held without bond, and told the judge that he's an over-the-road trucker and his job supports his family.

"So, in other words I'll be sitting in jail and probably lose my job, too?" Romero asked U.S. Magistrate Judge Laird Milburn.

"Yes," the magistrate responded.

National Park Service personnel found the body of the German shepherd mix, with a rope around its neck, on the side of Rim Rock Drive. Tracks in the snow indicated the animal had been drug behind a vehicle for at least two miles.

1. The magistrate should have said, instead of simply, "yes,"...
"Tough shit, asswipe."

11. Everyone is entitled to bail, re: innocent until proven guilty.
Whoever did this is cruel and inhumane, but the nature of the crime doesn't negate the constitutional right to bail.

7. Did you read the whole story? He kidnapped the dog and told his own sister he was going to kill it.
And all he's worried about losing his job?

9. Yeah, that's what drove my post.
I trust prison will be unkind to him.
